Chapter 6: The Daughter I Never Knew I Had

I didn’t remember ending the call.

I didn’t remember sitting down.

I didn’t remember Marcus taking the phone from my hand.

All I remembered was one sentence repeating in my mind.

Your daughter is alive.

For eight years, I believed I had no children.

For eight years, I believed my dream of becoming a mother had disappeared because fate had been cruel.

But fate wasn’t cruel.

Adrian was.

“Tell me everything,” I whispered.

Marcus looked at me carefully.

“Are you sure?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“But I need to know.””

He nodded.

Then he called Claire back.

This time, we put the phone on speaker.

A woman’s nervous voice filled the room.

“Hello?””

“Claire,” Marcus said.

“We need the truth.””

She was quiet.

“I know.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who is my daughter?””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“Her name is Lily.””

The name hit me like a memory I had never been allowed to have.

“How old?””

“Seven.””

Seven.

My daughter had been alive for seven years.

Seven birthdays.

Seven Christmas mornings.

Seven years of moments I never saw.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Claire started crying.

“Because Adrian wanted control.””

My fists tightened.

“Explain.””

“He told me he would leave you.””

I laughed bitterly.

Of course.

The same promise he made everyone.

“He said your marriage was over. He said you knew about me.””

I stared at nothing.

“He told me you didn’t want the baby.””

My heart broke.

“What?””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“He said you were focused on your career. That you wanted the foundation more than motherhood.””

I covered my mouth.

It was a lie.

A horrible, calculated lie.

Because Adrian knew my greatest dream.

He knew how much I wanted a child.

He knew because I cried in his arms when doctors told us we were struggling to conceive.

He held me.

He promised me we would keep trying.

And all along…

He already had a daughter.

“Where is Lily now?”” I asked.

Claire hesitated.

“She’s with me.””

A small relief.

Then fear.

“Is she safe?””

“Yes.””

The answer came quickly.

“She’s safe.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Why contact Elena tonight?””

Claire was silent.

Then she answered.

“Because Adrian threatened me.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

“He found out I had the documents.””

My stomach tightened.

“What documents?””

“The ones proving Lily is his daughter.””

Marcus looked at the folder.

“What does that have to do with Elena?””

Claire whispered:

“Because Adrian planned to use Lily’s existence against her.””

The room went cold.

“How?””

“He wanted to destroy Elena’s reputation.””

My hands shook.

“He wanted people to believe she was unstable. That she abandoned her own child.””

I closed my eyes.

The gala.

The public humiliation.

The accusations.

It was all part of a plan.

Not an accident.

Not one moment of anger.

A strategy.

“He was going to take everything,” Claire said.

Marcus’s voice became dangerous.

“What else?””

Another pause.

Then Claire spoke.

“He told me once that if Elena ever discovered the truth, he would make sure nobody believed her.””

I looked around the room.

At my brothers.

At the documents.

At the life I thought I understood.

Adrian hadn’t just cheated.

He hadn’t just lied.

He had created an entire world where I was the villain.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Adrian.

I opened it.

*You have no idea what you’ve started.*

Another message arrived.

*Come home. We need to talk.*

Then a third.

*Bring your brothers if you want. They won’t save you.*

Marcus saw my face.

“What did he say?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the messages.

Then he looked at me.

“Elena.””

I looked up.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t scared of Adrian.

I was angry.

Not the kind of anger that destroys.

The kind that rebuilds.

“Take me to him.””

Marcus frowned.

“Are you sure?””

I stood.

“Yes.””

I picked up the folder.

“I spent eight years letting him tell my story.””

I looked at my brothers.

“Now it’s my turn.””

But as we reached the door, another message appeared.

This one wasn’t from Adrian.

It was from Claire.

Only four words.

May you like

And they changed everything.

*Lily knows about you.*
