Chapter 5: The Family He Hid From Me

The first thing my brothers did after leaving the gala was take me somewhere I hadn’t been in years.

My childhood home.

The place I abandoned because Adrian convinced me my family was the problem.

The house looked smaller than I remembered.

But it felt safer.

Marcus unlocked the door and turned on the lights.

Nothing had changed.

The old wooden table.

The family photographs.

The bookshelf filled with my father’s old journals.

My throat tightened.

“I haven’t been here since the wedding.””

Marcus looked down.

“I know.””

The sadness in his voice hurt more than anger would have.

Julian placed the folder on the table.

“Sit down, Elena.””

I did.

Caleb placed a glass of water in front of me.

The same way he used to when I was a child and cried after falling off my bike.

Some things never changed.

Only people did.

“What did you find?”” I asked.

Marcus opened the folder.

“We started looking into Adrian three months ago.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Julian spoke.

“Because Mom told us something before she died.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She knew Adrian wasn’t who he claimed to be.””

I stared at him.

“My mother?””

Julian nodded.

“She tried to warn you.””

A memory flashed through my mind.

My mother sitting at my wedding.

The way she looked at Adrian.

The way she held my hand afterward.

The way she whispered, “Marriage isn’t supposed to make you smaller.””

I thought she was just being emotional.

I thought she didn’t understand him.

I was wrong.

“She knew?””

Marcus nodded.

“She hired someone to investigate him.””

He opened another document.

Inside were reports.

Bank records.

Company transfers.

Names.

Dates.

My eyes moved across the pages.

“What am I looking at?””

Caleb answered.

“Adrian wasn’t building the foundation with you.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“He was using it.””

Marcus pointed at several transactions.

“Money was moved from charity accounts into private investments.””

I felt sick.

“No.””

“Elena—”

“No.””

I pushed the papers away.

“He would never.””

The silence afterward hurt.

Because everyone knew.

Even me.

A part of me had known.

I just didn’t want to admit it.

Marcus softened his voice.

“We didn’t want to believe it either.””

He showed me another document.

“This is why we waited.””

I read the page.

Then read it again.

My name was there.

My signature.

Except I had never signed it.

“What is this?””

Julian’s expression hardened.

“A transfer agreement.””

I looked at Adrian’s name.

Then mine.

“He forged my signature?””

Caleb nodded.

“And he did it years ago.””

The room became painfully quiet.

The man I loved hadn’t simply betrayed me.

He had planned it.

He had studied me.

He had built a cage and convinced me it was a home.

I covered my face.

Not because I was weak.

Because I was trying not to break.

Marcus sat beside me.

“Elena.””

I looked at him.

“I left you all because of him.””

His expression softened.

“I know.””

“I believed him.””

“I know.””

“I thought you were trying to ruin my marriage.””

Marcus looked away.

The pain on his face was obvious.

“But we never stopped being your family.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because I had spent years trying to prove I didn’t need anyone.

And the people who loved me most were still waiting.

My phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Marcus looked at me.

“Don’t answer.””

I stared at it.

Then I did.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

“Is this Elena Vale?””

“Yes.””

A shaky breath.

“I need to tell you the truth about Adrian.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

The woman hesitated.

Then she said the words that made my blood run cold.

“I’m the woman in the photograph.””

I stood up.

My brothers looked at me.

The woman continued.

“My name is Claire.””

I couldn’t speak.

She whispered:

“And the baby Adrian told you never existed…”

A pause.

A painful pause.

“…is your daughter.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“My daughter?””

“Yes.””

My voice cracked.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire started crying.

“No, Elena. What’s impossible is that he convinced you she died.””

I stopped breathing.

“What did you say?””

The line trembled.

“He told you the baby was gone.””

My hand shook.

“But he lied.””

A cold silence followed.

May you like

Then Claire whispered:

“Your daughter is alive.””
