Chapter 14: The Last Person I Expected

I called her before I even knew what I was going to say.

Her name appeared on my screen.

Samantha Reed.

My best friend.

My business partner.

The woman who held my hand when I cried after my mother died.

The woman who told me Adrian was “just stressed.””

The woman who convinced me not to leave him.

The woman who had been there every time I questioned myself.

She answered after the third ring.

“Elena?””

Her voice sounded normal.

That hurt more than anything.

“Where is Noah?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“What?””

“You heard me.””

My brothers watched me.

Rebecca sat frozen.

Samantha finally spoke.

“Elena, I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

My voice shook.

“Not anymore.””

Another pause.

Then she whispered:

“He told you.””

The words made my stomach drop.

“You knew.””

“Elena…”

“You knew about Lily.””

Silence.

“You knew about Noah.””

Silence.

“You knew about everything.””

Her breathing changed.

And that was when I knew.

Not because she admitted it.

Because she didn’t deny it.

“Why?”” I asked.

My voice cracked.

“Why would you do this?””

Samantha started crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone who hurt me used the same excuse.

“I was protecting you.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You were protecting him.””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

“Tell me the truth.””

A long silence.

Then Samantha whispered:

“Adrian came to me before your wedding.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“He asked me to help him.””

“With what?””

“He said you were difficult.””

My jaw clenched.

“He said you were too independent. Too emotional. That your father controlled your life.””

My father.

Again.

Always my father.

“What did he offer you?””

Samantha cried harder.

“Money.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The simplest explanation.

Greed.

Fear.

Weakness.

“He promised me a position in the foundation.””

“And you helped him.””

“I didn’t know how far he would go.””

I stared at the phone.

“You helped him take my company.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice became cold.

“You did.””

She went quiet.

Then she said:

“I have something you need.””

I almost ended the call.

But I waited.

“What?””

“The original documents.””

My heart stopped.

“What documents?””

“The ones Adrian used to steal control.””

Marcus immediately looked at me.

“Keep her talking,” he mouthed.

Samantha continued.

“I kept copies.””

“Why?””

“Because I was scared.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You should have been.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

For a moment, I heard the old Samantha.

The person I thought I knew.

Then I remembered.

People don’t become different when they betray you.

They reveal who they were all along.

“Where are the documents?””

She gave an address.

Before hanging up, she whispered:

“Elena.””

I paused.

“What?””

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at my brothers.

At Rebecca.

At everything I lost.

“Sorry doesn’t give me back eight years.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice softened slightly.

“You don’t.””

I ended the call.

We met Samantha at an abandoned office building connected to the old foundation.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Smaller.

She handed Marcus a box.

“I kept everything.””

Julian looked at her.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because I knew one day she would find out.””

The words hurt.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I saw what he was becoming.””

“And you stayed.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus opened the box.

Inside were contracts.

Recordings.

Emails.

Everything.

Then Caleb found something else.

A video file.

“What is this?””

Samantha went pale.

“I don’t know.””

He opened it.

The screen showed Adrian.

Sitting in his office.

Talking to someone.

Someone off-camera.

His voice filled the room.

“If Elena ever finds out about Lily, I’ll make sure she loses everything.””

My hands curled into fists.

The video continued.

Then Adrian said something that made everyone freeze.

“Because she was never supposed to inherit anything.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

The video continued.

Adrian smiled.

“My marriage to Elena was never about love.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“It was about access.””

Marcus looked furious.

But I kept watching.

Because I needed to hear it.

I needed the truth.

Then Adrian leaned closer to the camera.

“And when her father’s secret comes out…”

He smiled.

“Everyone will finally understand why Elena was never meant to lead.””

The video ended.

The room was silent.

Then Rebecca whispered:

“What secret?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

There was still one final piece missing.

The truth my father died protecting.
