Chapter 8: The Brother Who Came Back for Revenge

The church was already full when we arrived.

Guests in expensive suits filled the pews. White roses decorated the altar. A string quartet played softly near the entrance.

Everything looked exactly as I had imagined my wedding day.

Except I wasn't the bride anymore.

I was a woman carrying a box of secrets that could destroy everyone in that room.

Elijah walked beside me.

He hadn't spoken since leaving Margaret's office.

Daniel followed us, leaning heavily on his cane.

As we entered the church, conversations stopped.

My stepmother stood near the front pew.

Vanessa wore a champagne-colored dress and held a bouquet of white roses.

Brielle stood beside her.

When Vanessa saw me, she smiled.

It was the same smile she'd worn the night she destroyed my gown.

But her eyes moved immediately to the crimson dress I was carrying inside a garment bag.

Her smile disappeared.

"Amara," she said sharply.

"Where have you been?""

I ignored her.

William Carter approached.

His silver hair was perfectly styled, and his tailored suit looked expensive enough to pay for the entire church renovation.

He extended his hand toward Elijah.

"Son.""

Elijah didn't take it.

"Don't call me that.""

William's expression tightened.

"Not here.""

"Especially here.""

Several guests turned toward us.

William lowered his voice.

"We can discuss this privately.""

Elijah stared at him.

"You knew Daniel was my father?""

William's jaw moved.

"Your mother made mistakes.""

"Did you switch me with my brother?""

William glanced toward Vanessa.

She immediately stepped forward.

"Elijah, you're upset. This isn't the time.""

He turned toward her.

"You knew too?""

Vanessa looked away.

That was enough.

Brielle suddenly stepped between us.

"Can everyone stop making a scene? People are waiting.""

I looked at her.

"You helped destroy my wedding dress because you knew what was in my mother's box.""

She lifted her chin.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

I reached into my handbag and removed the silver flash drive.

"Then you won't mind explaining why this contains Elijah's original birth records.""

Brielle's face drained of color.

William snatched the drive from my hand.

"Where did you get this?""

"Ask your wife.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"William, don't.""

He looked at her.

For a moment, I saw something neither of them could hide.

They were afraid of each other.

Then a voice came from behind us.

"Well, this is a lovely family reunion.""

Everyone turned.

A man walked down the center aisle.

He wore a black suit and carried a small leather folder.

Elijah froze.

It was like looking into a mirror.

The same height.

The same dark hair.

The same eyes.

But this man had a scar near his left eyebrow.

Ethan.

He stopped in front of Elijah.

"Hello, brother.""

Elijah stared at him.

"You're Ethan?""

"That's what they called me.""

Ethan extended his hand.

Elijah didn't move.

Ethan laughed.

"Don't worry. I don't expect a warm welcome. We didn't exactly grow up together.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Ethan.""

Ethan turned.

"Mr. Bennett.""

Daniel's face softened.

"Your mother wanted to find you.""

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Which mother?""

The question cut through the room.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Ethan continued.

"Elizabeth, who gave birth to me? Or the woman who raised me after Vanessa paid her to keep quiet?""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"That's enough.""

Ethan turned toward her.

"No. You've had twelve years of silence. I'm done giving you that.""

He opened his folder and removed a photograph.

It showed a young woman holding two newborn babies.

Elizabeth.

Daniel.

And two tiny boys.

Ethan held it up.

"Everyone here deserves to know what happened.""

William grabbed his arm.

"Put that away.""

Ethan pulled free.

"Why? Afraid they'll learn that you paid someone to steal your own son?""

A collective gasp moved through the church.

Elijah looked at Ethan.

"Why did you come here?""

Ethan's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely hurt.

"Because I wanted to meet you.""

"Then why are you threatening everyone?""

"Because I spent twenty-nine years wondering why my biological family never came looking for me.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"I did look for you.""

"Not hard enough.""

The words struck Daniel like a slap.

Ethan turned toward me.

"And you must be Amara.""

I nodded.

He studied my face.

"Your mother visited me once.""

My breath caught.

"What did she say?""

"She told me I had a brother and a sister.""

I frowned.

"A sister?""

He smiled sadly.

"She told me about you. She said you were the reason she kept fighting.""

My eyes filled.

"Did she tell you why she left?""

"She told me William was dangerous. She also told me that Vanessa had helped him alter our records.""

He looked at Vanessa.

"She said you were the person who knew where the original documents were hidden.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Your mother was a liar.""

Ethan opened the folder again.

"Then perhaps you'd like to explain this.""

He removed a bank transfer receipt.

It showed a payment made to the couple who had raised him.

The amount was $250,000.

The sender?

Vanessa Carter.

The date?

Three days after Elizabeth's death.

Elijah took the paper.

His face became expressionless.

"Why?""

Vanessa began to cry.

"Elijah, sweetheart, you don't understand.""

"Then explain it.""

William stepped between them.

"She was helping your mother.""

Ethan laughed.

"Your wife paid my adoptive parents to keep me away. That's your definition of helping?""

William turned toward him.

"Watch your mouth.""

Ethan leaned closer.

"Or what? You'll send me away again?""

The church had fallen completely silent.

Then Brielle suddenly grabbed Vanessa's handbag.

"Mom, we need to leave.""

Vanessa caught her wrist.

"Don't touch that.""

But the bag had already fallen.

Its contents spilled across the floor.

Lipstick.

Car keys.

A wallet.

And a small white envelope.

Ethan picked it up.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Daniel and Elizabeth standing together outside a hospital.

On the back, a message had been written in black ink.

*THE SECOND BABY WAS NEVER THE ONE THEY THOUGHT.*

Ethan read it twice.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"What does this mean?""

Daniel's face turned pale.

I stepped closer.

"Dad?""

He stared at the photograph.

Then he whispered:

"Your mother discovered the switch wasn't the only thing Vanessa changed.""

William suddenly shouted.

"Give me that photograph!""

Ethan stepped backward.

"Why?""

William looked toward the church doors.

Two men in dark suits entered.

One approached William and whispered something into his ear.

William's expression changed.

He turned toward me.

"Amara, the wedding is over.""

I looked at him.

"It never started.""

He shook his head.

"No. You don't understand. The police have just found something in Daniel's old house.""

My father gripped his cane.

"What?""

William looked directly at him.

"The remains of the woman who helped Vanessa arrange the hospital switch.""

Then he added:

"Her name was Margaret Lewis.""

I turned toward Margaret.

May you like

But Margaret wasn't standing behind us.

She was gone.
