Chapter 12: The DNA Test That Destroyed Everything

I looked at the DNA report.

Then I looked at the people standing around me.

William Carter.

Daniel Bennett.

Elijah.

Ethan.

Margaret.

And the man whose name appeared at the bottom of the report.

I couldn't make myself read it.

"Who?"" I whispered.

Ethan handed me the document.

I looked down.

*Biological father: Daniel Bennett.*

For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

Then I looked at Daniel.

He was crying.

"Is this real?""

He nodded.

I stepped toward him.

"You're my biological father?""

"Yes, sweetheart.""

I stared at him.

"But you told me William was.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I never said that. William did.""

I turned toward William.

His expression was furious.

"That report is fake.""

Ethan placed another document on the pew.

"Independent laboratory. Verified samples. The results are conclusive.""

William snatched the paper.

He scanned the details.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"You've been lying to everyone.""

Daniel's voice was steady.

"No. You have.""

William laughed.

"Then explain Catherine.""

Margaret stepped forward.

"I can.""

She opened her handbag and removed a sealed folder.

Inside were medical records, adoption papers, and a DNA test dated twenty-nine years earlier.

"After Catherine discovered the hospital switch, she arranged a second DNA test. She knew Amara's records had been altered. She wanted to establish her identity before anyone could change them again.""

I took the documents.

The first report confirmed Daniel was my biological father.

The second confirmed Catherine was my biological mother.

My mother had adopted me legally.

The three people I had considered my parents were connected by a truth I had never known.

Daniel had given me life.

Catherine had given birth to me.

And the woman who raised me had given me everything else.

I looked at William.

"Why did you tell everyone you were my father?""

He laughed bitterly.

"Because Catherine's estate was supposed to pass through her bloodline. I was her husband. I believed I had a right to control it.""

"You weren't even married to her when I was born.""

His expression changed.

Margaret corrected him.

"William and Catherine were married when Amara was conceived, but the marriage was dissolved before her birth.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because Catherine discovered he had been using her inheritance to finance his company.""

William's voice became sharp.

"She was unstable.""

Margaret shook her head.

"She was protecting her daughter.""

William pointed at Daniel.

"You helped her steal my future!""

Daniel stepped forward.

"No. I helped her protect her child.""

The words seemed to silence the entire church.

I looked at my father.

"Why did you disappear?""

He took a deep breath.

"After your mother died, Vanessa found the original trust documents. She threatened to expose your adoption and have you declared legally incapable of managing the estate.""

"Why would she do that?""

"Because William wanted the company, and Vanessa wanted the money. They believed that if you were considered unfit, the trust would pass to their control.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was no longer crying.

She stood completely still.

Daniel continued.

"I went into hiding because I had evidence of their financial crimes. I thought if I disappeared, they'd stop looking for you.""

I felt tears filling my eyes.

"You could have told me.""

"I know.""

"You could have trusted me.""

"I know, sweetheart.""

I turned away.

For twelve years, I had mourned a father who was alive.

I had blamed myself for not being enough to make him stay.

Now I understood that he had made a terrible decision believing it would protect me.

But understanding didn't erase the pain.

Elijah approached.

"Amara?""

I turned.

He looked devastated.

"I need to apologize.""

I shook my head.

"You didn't know.""

"I should have questioned my father.""

"You were a child when this started.""

"I'm not a child now.""

He looked toward Daniel.

"All my life, I thought William was my father. Now I find out he's not. And the man who raised me knew the truth.""

Daniel reached for him.

Elijah stepped back.

"Please don't.""

My father lowered his hand.

Elijah looked at me.

"I don't know what happens next. I don't know how we repair any of this.""

I nodded.

"Neither do I.""

He glanced at my crimson wedding dress, still hanging inside its garment bag.

"Was that what your mother designed?""

I smiled sadly.

"Yes.""

He touched the fabric.

"She would have wanted you to wear it.""

I looked down.

For the first time that morning, I felt something other than anger.

Then Detective Harris returned.

She had been speaking with another officer outside.

"Mr. Carter, Mrs. Carter, I need both of you to come with us.""

William laughed.

"On what evidence?""

She opened a folder.

"Financial transfers, falsified hospital records, witness testimony, and a recording implicating both of you in the disappearance of Rebecca Lewis.""

Vanessa immediately looked at Brielle.

"You did this.""

Brielle wiped her face.

"I didn't do anything. I just stopped lying.""

Detective Harris turned toward Ethan.

"Mr. Carter, we also need your statement regarding Rebecca's disappearance.""

Ethan nodded.

"Of course.""

William suddenly looked at me.

"You think you've won?""

I didn't answer.

He stepped closer.

"That company will collapse without me. The trust will be frozen. You'll lose everything.""

I looked at him.

"Then I'll lose everything honestly.""

His expression twisted.

"You have no idea what you're walking into.""

I smiled faintly.

"Neither did you when you destroyed my mother's family.""

The officers escorted him toward the entrance.

Vanessa followed, but before she left, she turned toward me.

"Amara, you owe me.""

I stared at her.

"For what?""

"For raising you.""

I almost laughed.

"You didn't raise me. You occupied my father's house while searching for my mother's money.""

Her face crumpled.

Brielle remained behind.

She looked at me with red eyes.

"Amara, I'm sorry.""

I looked at the girl who had cut my wedding dress.

The girl who had laughed while my mother's memories were destroyed.

"Why did you do it?""

She lowered her head.

"Because Mom told me that if you married Elijah, everything would belong to you. She said I would be left with nothing.""

"And you believed her?""

Brielle nodded.

I looked away.

"I can't forgive you today.""

She began crying.

"But I won't let you lie about what happened either.""

The officers led Vanessa away.

William followed.

The church slowly emptied.

The wedding flowers remained untouched.

The music had stopped.

And my crimson dress was still hanging beside the altar.

I thought the worst was finally over.

Then Detective Harris returned with one final document.

"Amara, there's something else.""

She placed it in my hands.

It was an official notice from the court.

The original Carter family trust had been transferred to my control.

But there was a handwritten note attached.

It wasn't from a lawyer.

It was from my mother.

My darling girl, if you've reached this point, you now know why I made you wait until your wedding day.

I turned the page.

There was one final sentence.

The person who destroyed my family is not the person you think. And the last piece of evidence is hidden inside the dress you were never supposed to wear.

I looked down at the crimson gown.

Then I noticed something strange.

One of the gold embroidered flowers near the waist had been sewn differently from the others.

I touched it.

A tiny metal key slipped out.

May you like

And on the back of the key was a name.

*CATHERINE.*
