Chapter 14: The Woman Who Betrayed Both My Mothers
Detective Harris immediately stood between Margaret and the door.
"Nobody leaves.""
Margaret looked at me.
"Amara, please.""
I stepped backward.
"Did you betray Catherine?""
She shook her head.
"I saved her.""
"The recording says you gave her location to William.""
"Because I had no choice.""
Daniel's voice was cold.
"There's always a choice.""
Margaret looked at him.
"You think I wanted any of this?""
"Then explain.""
She sat down.
For several seconds, she stared at her hands.
Then she began.
"Twenty-nine years ago, I was working at St. Mary's Hospital with Rebecca Lewis. Catherine had just given birth to Amara. Elizabeth had given birth to Elijah and Ethan.""
I listened carefully.
"William wanted control of Catherine's inheritance. He knew the trust would eventually pass to her biological child. He also knew that Daniel was the father of the twins.""
Margaret continued.
"He approached Rebecca and offered her money to alter the birth records. But Rebecca became frightened when she realized William intended to separate the twins permanently.""
"What did you do?"" I asked.
"I helped Catherine find out what had happened. I gave her copies of the original hospital records.""
"Then why did she accuse you of betrayal?""
Margaret's eyes filled.
"Because William threatened my daughter.""
I froze.
"Your daughter?""
Margaret nodded.
"Rebecca was my daughter.""
The room fell silent.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Rebecca Lewis was your daughter?""
"Yes.""
I looked at the photograph of the woman who had switched the babies.
"Why did you let William pay her?""
Margaret wiped her cheeks.
"Rebecca was young. She believed she could help us by pretending to cooperate. She was supposed to preserve the original records and give them to Catherine.""
"Then what happened?""
Margaret looked at the cassette player.
"William discovered what she was doing. He threatened to have her arrested and make sure she never saw her children again. I gave him Catherine's location because he promised to leave Rebecca alone.""
I shook my head.
"But Catherine's recording says you betrayed her twice.""
Margaret nodded slowly.
"I did.""
She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"After Catherine escaped, I helped William locate her again. I thought he would simply force her to surrender the trust documents.""
"What happened?""
Margaret began crying.
"He found her at a safe house outside Austin. But Catherine had already escaped.""
"Where did she go?""
"I don't know.""
"Then how did she disappear?""
Margaret looked at Daniel.
"Because Daniel helped her.""
My father stood motionless.
"That's not what happened.""
Margaret shook her head.
"You know it is.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Tell her the whole truth.""
Margaret looked at me.
"Your mother was the woman who raised you. Catherine was your biological mother. But after the hospital scandal, Catherine and Daniel developed a plan to protect you. They arranged for Catherine to disappear while your mother raised you under a legal adoption.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because William couldn't legally challenge the adoption without exposing the hospital fraud.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Did you know Catherine was alive?""
He nodded.
"I received letters from her for years.""
My throat tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because every letter contained the same warning. She believed William was watching you.""
I sat down.
My entire childhood had been built around protecting me from a truth I hadn't even known existed.
Then Margaret placed the envelope on the table.
"There's something else.""
Detective Harris opened it.
Inside was an original hospital ledger.
The pages were yellowed and brittle.
Several entries had been crossed out.
But one remained untouched.
*Birth Record 1459.*
My birth record.
The ledger identified Daniel Bennett and Catherine Hayes as my biological parents.
But below their names was another entry.
A second guardian.
*Legal guardian: Margaret Lewis.*
I looked at her.
"Why were you listed?""
Margaret lowered her head.
"Because Catherine wanted me to become your guardian if anything happened to her and Daniel.""
"Then why did you let Vanessa marry my father?""
"I was supposed to stop her.""
Her voice broke.
"But William threatened Rebecca again. I chose my daughter over my promise to Catherine.""
Ethan looked at her.
"Where is Rebecca now?""
Margaret hesitated.
"I don't know.""
Detective Harris examined the ledger.
"Mrs. Lewis, this is significant evidence. We need to take it into custody.""
Margaret nodded.
Then she looked at me.
"There's one thing I need you to understand. Your mother never regretted raising you. She loved you more than anything.""
I closed my eyes.
I remembered the way my mother used to kiss my forehead before bed.
The way she taught me to sew.
The way she always said that family was built through love, not blood.
I had spent the morning discovering that my family wasn't what I thought.
But that didn't change who had loved me.
I picked up Catherine's letter.
"Where is she?""
Margaret looked at me.
"I don't know.""
"Then I'll find her.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Amara, sweetheart, you don't have to.""
"Yes, I do.""
I looked at the two documents.
One proved who I was.
The other proved who had tried to erase me.
Detective Harris closed the folder.
"We'll investigate Catherine's disappearance and Rebecca's whereabouts. But there's another issue.""
"What?""
She looked at the trust documents.
"William's lawyers have already filed an emergency petition to freeze your inheritance. They claim the trust transfer was obtained through fraudulent records.""
Elijah shook his head.
"He can't do that.""
"He can try.""
I looked at the crimson gown.
My mother had hidden the key inside it.
She had left me the evidence.
She had made sure I would find the truth.
And now I knew why the dress was red.
It wasn't simply a wedding color.
It was a warning.
I picked up my phone and called the bank manager.
"I need a complete copy of every document in the original trust.""
He hesitated.
"Miss Bennett, that's a substantial request.""
"Then start with the document William Carter is trying to destroy.""
A moment later, my phone buzzed.
An email had arrived from the bank.
The subject line read:
*FINAL BENEFICIARY CONFIRMATION — TRUST 1459.*
I opened it.
The document named me as the sole controlling beneficiary.
But there was an additional condition.
If I married before the trust was formally activated, the beneficiary designation would be reviewed.
I stared at the date.
The trust had activated that morning.
At eleven o'clock.
The exact time my wedding ceremony was supposed to begin.
William had known.
He had planned everything around that deadline.
I looked at Elijah.
"He needed me to sign before eleven.""
Elijah nodded.
"That's why he was desperate to get you to the church.""
Daniel picked up the document.
"Then he has lost.""
I wanted to believe that.
But before anyone could celebrate, Detective Harris received a phone call.
She listened for several seconds.
Then her face changed.
"Where?""
She ended the call.
"There's been a development.""
"What?""
"The police have located Rebecca Lewis.""
Margaret stood abruptly.
"Where is she?""
Detective Harris looked at me.
"At a private care facility outside Austin.""
I felt my heart begin to race.
"Is she alive?""
The detective nodded.
"Yes.""
May you like
Then she added:
"She has asked to speak with Amara Bennett.""
