Chapter 11: My Stepmother's Confession
Brielle stood in the center aisle, trembling.
Vanessa reached for her again.
"Don't you dare.""
Brielle stepped backward.
"No, Mom. I'm done.""
The guests watched in complete silence.
Detective Harris moved closer.
"Miss, whatever you have to say, you can say it here.""
Brielle looked at me.
"Do you remember the night your mother died?""
I nodded slowly.
I remembered the hospital.
The rain.
My mother's cold hand.
The doctor telling me there was nothing more they could do.
I had been seventeen.
"Yes.""
Brielle swallowed.
"Mom told me what really happened.""
Vanessa's face turned white.
"That was years ago. You were a child.""
"I was sixteen.""
"You misunderstood.""
"No, Mom. I didn't.""
Brielle turned toward the detective.
"Vanessa paid someone to follow Catherine after she left the hospital.""
William immediately interrupted.
"That's ridiculous.""
Brielle ignored him.
"She found out Catherine was living under another name. She knew Catherine had documents proving the original trust belonged to Amara.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Where did she go?""
Brielle's voice broke.
"To a small house outside Austin. Mom hired someone to scare her into leaving.""
"Scare her?""
Brielle nodded.
"But something went wrong.""
The church fell silent.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You're making accusations you cannot prove.""
Brielle looked at her mother.
"I found the payment receipts in your old desk. I found the letters. I found the photograph of Catherine.""
She reached into her purse and removed a folded piece of paper.
"Here.""
Detective Harris accepted it.
It was a bank transfer.
The recipient was an unidentified private security contractor.
The payment date matched the week Catherine disappeared.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you hurt my mother?""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Your mother?""
I felt something inside me tighten.
"Yes. My mother. The woman who raised me.""
Vanessa laughed.
"She was never supposed to have you. Catherine made a foolish decision, and everyone expected me to clean up the mess.""
"Why?""
"Because William wanted the trust. Catherine had something he couldn't take legally, and your mother was helping her.""
William stepped forward.
"Vanessa, stop talking.""
She turned toward him.
"You told me everything would be fine!""
"Not here.""
"You promised me the company!""
Detective Harris raised her hand.
"Mrs. Carter, you need to calm down.""
Vanessa ignored her.
She pointed at William.
"You married me because I knew where Catherine was. You told me I would have security, money, and a future.""
William's face became stone.
"You were paid for your services.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Paid? I spent twelve years raising Daniel's daughter while you watched from a distance!""
I stared at her.
"You married my father to get close to me?""
She turned toward me.
"Your father had the documents. I thought if I married him, I could find them.""
"Did you ever love him?""
Vanessa's expression flickered.
Then she shrugged.
"Daniel was useful.""
I looked at my father.
He closed his eyes.
For twelve years, this woman had shared his home, eaten at his table, and pretended to be part of our family.
All while searching for evidence.
Detective Harris took Vanessa's handbag.
"We're going to need you to come with us.""
Vanessa suddenly smiled.
"You don't have enough.""
She looked at me.
"Do you really think Catherine's letter proves anything? A letter can be written by anyone.""
I held up the original adoption agreement.
"And this?""
"Forged.""
"The bank records?""
"Fabricated.""
"The hospital records?""
She laughed.
"Ask Margaret.""
Everyone turned.
Margaret stood motionless.
Vanessa pointed at her.
"She wasn't just a bank employee. She was Catherine's sister.""
I stared.
"What?""
Margaret lowered her head.
Vanessa continued.
"Margaret helped Catherine arrange the adoption. She knew where every document was hidden. And when Catherine disappeared, Margaret helped your mother cover it up.""
I turned toward Margaret.
"Is that true?""
She nodded.
"Catherine was my older sister.""
My chest tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was afraid you'd hate me for keeping you away from her.""
I looked at the photograph.
The woman in the picture had been my biological mother.
Margaret had been my biological aunt.
And my mother had known all along.
Before I could ask another question, William suddenly moved toward the church entrance.
Detective Harris blocked him.
"Mr. Carter, stay where you are.""
He pulled out his phone.
"Do you know who I am?""
"Yes.""
"Then call your supervisor.""
Detective Harris didn't move.
"You're being questioned in connection with a missing person investigation and suspected financial fraud.""
William laughed.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Actually, Detective, there's something else.""
He opened his leather folder and removed a small digital recorder.
"Rebecca Lewis gave me this before she disappeared.""
Margaret turned sharply.
"Rebecca gave you that?""
Ethan nodded.
"She contacted me two weeks ago. She said she wanted to confess.""
He pressed play.
A woman's trembling voice filled the church.
"My name is Rebecca Lewis. I helped Vanessa Carter alter the birth records at St. Mary's Hospital. But the woman who ordered the second switch wasn't Vanessa.""
I looked at William.
His face had gone completely white.
The recording continued.
"William Carter ordered it. He wanted to separate the twins, but he also wanted to make sure Amara Bennett would never inherit Catherine's estate.""
A pause.
Then came the sentence that made everyone freeze.
"He paid someone at the hospital to replace Amara's original birth certificate with another child's identity.""
I stared at the recorder.
"What does that mean?""
Ethan stopped the recording.
He looked at me.
"It means we still don't know who your biological father is.""
Daniel stepped toward me.
"Amara, no.""
But Ethan was already opening another document.
It was a DNA report.
May you like
And the name listed as the biological father wasn't William Carter.
It was someone standing inside that church.
