Chapter 6: The Groom's Real Identity
At 9:38 a.m., I stood inside Margaret's office, holding a flash drive that could destroy two families.
The wedding was less than ninety minutes away.
I should have been getting my hair done.
I should have been taking photographs with my bridesmaids.
Instead, I was discovering that the man I loved might have been born into a lie.
Margaret connected the drive to her computer.
A folder appeared.
Inside were scanned birth certificates, hospital records, legal agreements, and several photographs.
The first document was Elijah's original birth certificate.
His mother was listed as Elizabeth Carter.
His father was listed as:
*Daniel Bennett.*
I stopped breathing.
"No.""
Margaret looked at me.
"Amara?""
I read the name again.
Daniel Bennett.
My father.
The man who had raised me.
The man William had said disappeared because of a business dispute.
The man who had just told me Elijah wasn't William's biological son.
I sat down.
"Does this mean Elijah and I have the same father?""
Margaret didn't answer immediately.
She opened another document.
It was a DNA report dated twenty-nine years earlier.
The report confirmed that Daniel Bennett was Elijah's biological father.
My hands began trembling.
I wanted to throw the computer across the room.
I wanted to scream.
But most of all, I wanted to hear Elijah explain how much he knew.
Margaret continued reading.
"There's another document.""
It was a handwritten statement from Elizabeth Carter.
Elijah's mother.
I am leaving this statement because William has threatened to take my son away if I reveal the truth.
My eyes moved across the page.
Daniel Bennett is Elijah's biological father. William knows this. He agreed to raise Elijah as his own after I became pregnant, but later used the secret to control both Daniel and me.
I swallowed.
Vanessa helped William conceal the original records. She promised that if Elizabeth remained silent, Daniel would be allowed to stay in his daughter's life.
I looked at Margaret.
"Elizabeth is alive?""
Margaret shook her head.
"She died when Elijah was six. The official report said it was a car accident.""
I looked back at the screen.
The statement continued.
If anything happens to me, tell Elijah the truth. He deserves to know who his father is.
At the bottom was a signature.
Elizabeth Carter.
I covered my mouth.
The man I was supposed to marry was my half-brother.
The thought made me physically ill.
"Did my mother know?""
Margaret nodded.
"She discovered the original records shortly before she died.""
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
"Because she was afraid William would use the information to hurt you and Daniel.""
I stood up.
"Elijah needs to know.""
Margaret nodded.
"Yes. But we need to understand the rest of these files first.""
She opened another folder.
It contained a photograph of Daniel standing outside a hospital.
He was holding a newborn baby.
Beside him stood Elizabeth.
William was nowhere in the picture.
The date matched Elijah's birth.
I stared at my father's face.
He looked so young.
So happy.
I remembered him teaching me how to ride a bicycle.
I remembered him telling me that being a father wasn't about blood.
It was about showing up.
And he had shown up for me every single day.
Until he disappeared.
I wiped my eyes.
"Why did he leave?""
Margaret opened the final document.
It was a signed agreement between William and Daniel.
William had promised to protect Daniel's daughter in exchange for Daniel surrendering his legal claim to Elijah.
But someone had written a note across the bottom.
*Agreement VOIDED. Original beneficiary retained.*
Margaret leaned closer.
"Your mother must have challenged the agreement.""
I looked at the date.
It was signed two weeks before Daniel disappeared.
Then I noticed something else.
A second signature.
Vanessa's.
She had witnessed the agreement.
I felt anger rising in my chest.
"She knew everything.""
"Yes.""
"She knew Elijah was my brother.""
Margaret nodded slowly.
"That is what the documents indicate.""
I backed away from the computer.
For three years, I had loved Elijah.
We had talked about children.
About buying a house.
About growing old together.
And all that time, Vanessa had known.
She had watched me fall in love with someone who was my half-brother.
She had even encouraged the relationship.
Why?
Then the answer appeared on the screen.
A final document had been hidden inside the folder.
It was a trust amendment.
The original agreement stated that the controlling interest would pass to Daniel's legal children.
That included Amara.
And Elijah.
But William had changed the terms.
The amended document gave control to the spouse of whichever beneficiary married into the Carter family.
I read the clause twice.
Then I understood.
William wasn't trying to stop our wedding because he cared about family honor.
He wanted the marriage to happen.
He wanted me to sign away my inheritance.
And because Elijah and I were siblings, he knew the truth would eventually destroy the marriage and create a legal scandal.
It was a trap designed to make me surrender everything before I discovered the truth.
My phone vibrated.
Elijah.
*Elijah:* "Where are you? I've been calling everyone. The church is full, and your stepmother says you've disappeared.""
I stared at the message.
Then I typed.
*Me:* "We need to talk. Alone. Before the ceremony.""
His reply came immediately.
*Elijah:* "I'm coming to find you.""
I looked at Margaret.
"Can you arrange a meeting with my father?""
She picked up her phone.
"I'll try.""
Before she could dial, the office door opened.
A man stood in the doorway.
He was older than I remembered from the photographs. His hair was gray, his shoulders thinner, and he leaned slightly on a wooden cane.
But I recognized his eyes.
The same warm brown eyes I had seen every morning growing up.
The same eyes that had watched me ride my first bicycle.
My father.
Daniel Bennett.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then he whispered:
"My little girl.""
I ran toward him.
He dropped his cane and caught me in his arms.
I buried my face against his chest.
He smelled like cedarwood and old books.
Just like home.
"Where were you?"" I sobbed.
"Why did you leave me?""
He held me tighter.
"I never wanted to leave you, sweetheart.""
"You let me believe you were dead.""
"I know.""
"Mom knew?""
He nodded.
"Your mother knew I was alive. She helped me stay hidden because William had threatened to take you away.""
I pulled back.
"William is my biological father?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
"And Elijah?""
His expression crumpled.
"Elijah is my son.""
I felt tears spilling down my cheeks.
"Why didn't anyone tell us?""
Daniel looked at Margaret.
Then back at me.
"Because William wasn't the only person who wanted that secret buried.""
He reached inside his coat and removed a small photograph.
It showed Daniel holding a newborn baby.
But this time, I noticed a detail I had missed in the other photographs.
There was a second person standing beside him.
A woman wearing a hospital bracelet.
I recognized her immediately.
Vanessa.
My father placed the photograph on the desk.
"Amara, there's something else. Vanessa didn't simply help William hide Elijah's birth records.""
He took a shaky breath.
"She was the one who arranged the switch at the hospital.""
I stared at him.
"What switch?""
Daniel looked directly into my eyes.
"The baby William believed was his biological son wasn't the baby Elizabeth gave birth to.""
He pointed to the photograph.
"And the baby they gave to Daniel and Elizabeth that night wasn't the only child born in that hospital.""
My blood ran cold.
Daniel reached for my hand.
"Amara, before you walk into that church, you need to know that Elijah has a twin.""
Then he looked toward the doorway.
May you like
And whispered:
"He's already there, waiting for you.""
