Chapter 10: The Woman in My Mother's Photograph
"William Carter isn't the only person who lied about your birth.""
Margaret's words echoed through the church.
I stared at the photograph resting on the pew.
My mother was holding a baby.
Beside her stood a woman with dark hair, delicate features, and a small scar near her chin.
I had never seen her before.
"Who is she?"" I asked.
Margaret looked at Daniel.
My father lowered his head.
"Her name is Catherine.""
I waited.
"Who is Catherine?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Your biological mother.""
The church seemed to tilt.
I gripped the back of the pew.
"No.""
Daniel stepped toward me.
"Amara, sweetheart—"
"Don't call me that.""
He stopped.
I pointed at the photograph.
"That's my mother. That's the woman who raised me. The woman who taught me to sew, who held me when I was sick, who stayed awake when I had nightmares. You're telling me she wasn't my biological mother?""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"She was your mother in every way that mattered.""
"That's not what I asked!""
My voice cracked.
Margaret stepped forward.
"Please let him explain.""
I turned toward her.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"Your mother asked me to keep the truth hidden until you were old enough to understand.""
"Old enough? I'm twenty-nine!""
"I know.""
"Then why did nobody tell me?""
Margaret looked at the photograph.
"Because Catherine was involved in the same hospital scandal as Rebecca Lewis. She gave birth to you, but she was unmarried and frightened. Your mother had just lost a baby during a difficult pregnancy. Catherine agreed to let her raise you.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Did you know?""
He nodded.
"Your mother and Catherine were close friends. Catherine wanted you to have a stable home. She knew William was dangerous, and she believed your mother could protect you.""
"Why would William care about me?""
Daniel looked toward William.
"Because Catherine was his first wife.""
A shocked murmur swept through the church.
William immediately stepped forward.
"That's enough.""
I turned toward him.
"You're her husband?""
William's jaw tightened.
"She was my wife for less than a year.""
Margaret corrected him.
"She was your wife for three years, William. You simply erased the marriage when you decided to marry Elizabeth.""
William's face darkened.
I looked again at the photograph.
Catherine.
My biological mother.
William's first wife.
Then I looked at Daniel.
"Why did Mom raise me?""
"Because Catherine disappeared after the hospital incident," he explained.
"She believed William would use you to gain control of the family trust. Your mother offered to raise you under her name.""
"Was I adopted?""
"Legally, yes.""
"And William knew?""
Daniel nodded.
"He knew you were his biological daughter. But he didn't know where Catherine had gone, and he didn't know your mother had preserved the original adoption documents.""
I felt dizzy.
"So all these years, Vanessa knew?""
"Yes.""
I looked at my stepmother.
She was standing beside Brielle, her face unusually pale.
"Why did you never tell me?""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Because you were happy. You had a good life. Why would I destroy that?""
I stared at her.
"You destroyed my wedding dress.""
"That was different.""
"How?""
"Because your mother left you something that could destroy everything William and I built.""
I stepped closer.
"You were afraid I'd find the truth.""
Vanessa said nothing.
Margaret removed another document from her folder.
It was a hospital adoption agreement.
The signatures belonged to Catherine, my mother, and Daniel.
But there was something unusual.
The document included a handwritten condition.
*Amara's inheritance must remain untouched until her twenty-ninth birthday.*
My birthday had been three months earlier.
I looked at Margaret.
"What inheritance?""
She placed another paper beside it.
A trust certificate.
"Your biological mother inherited a controlling interest in the original Carter family estate. When she disappeared, that interest was placed in a protected trust. Your mother was named its temporary guardian.""
I looked at William.
His expression was no longer arrogant.
He looked terrified.
Margaret continued.
"On your twenty-ninth birthday, the trust automatically transferred to you.""
I shook my head.
"How much?""
"More than half of the Carter family's original holdings.""
Brielle gasped.
William stepped forward.
"That trust was never meant to go to her.""
Margaret looked directly at him.
"It belonged to Catherine. She had every legal right to leave it to her daughter.""
William pointed at Daniel.
"You helped them steal my company!""
Daniel straightened.
"No, William. You stole it first.""
For the first time, my father sounded completely unafraid.
He reached into his coat and removed a sealed envelope.
"Catherine gave me this before she disappeared.""
Margaret's face changed.
"You still have it?""
Daniel nodded.
He handed it to me.
The envelope was addressed in unfamiliar handwriting.
To my daughter, Amara.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Catherine holding me in a hospital room.
And a letter.
My precious daughter,
If you are reading this, then I have failed to return to you myself.
I did not give you away because I didn't love you. I gave you to the woman who could protect you when I couldn't.
Your mother loved you before she ever held you.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
There is one more truth you must know. The person who arranged my disappearance was not William.
I stopped reading.
My eyes moved to the final paragraph.
It was someone who knew exactly where I would be hiding.
I slowly raised my head.
Margaret was staring at Vanessa.
Vanessa was staring at Brielle.
And Brielle was crying.
"Mom," she whispered.
"You told me Catherine had died.""
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
"Be quiet.""
But Brielle pulled away.
May you like
Then she looked at me.
"Amara, there's something I need to tell you.""
