Chapter 9: The Boy Who Remembered

I ran upstairs.

I didn’t think.

I didn’t ask questions.

I just moved.

Because every nightmare I had lived through since Emma died suddenly had a new shape.

Someone had threatened my son.

Oliver was asleep when I entered his room.

His small body was curled beneath his blanket.

For one second, relief washed over me.

Then I noticed something.

His eyes were open.

“Dad?””

I stopped.

“You’re awake?””

He nodded slowly.

“Did you find out?””

My heart sank.

“Find out what?””

He looked down.

“About Mom.””

I walked closer.

“Oliver…”

He sat up.

“I heard you talking.””

I sat beside him.

“How much did you hear?””

He played with the edge of his blanket.

“The part about the necklace.””

I stayed quiet.

Then he whispered:

“And the man.””

“What man?””

Oliver looked afraid.

“The man who made Mom cry.””

My entire body went still.

“Oliver, what man?””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know his name.””

“Tell me what you remember.””

He swallowed.

“Before Mom went to the hospital, there was a man in our driveway.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Did you see his face?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Mom told me to hide.””

The room became silent.

“What did she say?””

Oliver closed his eyes, remembering.

“She said, ‘Don’t let him know you’re here.’”

I felt sick.

Emma had hidden our son from someone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Oliver’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought Mom told me not to.””

I pulled him into my arms.

“You should have told me.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I held him tighter.

“You did nothing wrong.””

He stayed quiet for a moment.

Then whispered:

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Is Diana the bad person?””

The question destroyed me.

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

Diana had lied.

She had hurt him.

But she had also been afraid.

And somewhere inside all of this was a bigger threat.

“I don’t know,” I finally said.

Oliver nodded.

Then he reached under his pillow.

My breath caught.

“What is that?””

He pulled out a small folded paper.

“I found this after Diana took the necklace.””

I took it carefully.

“Where did you find it?””

“Inside Mom’s old book.””

My fingers shook.

Emma’s birthday book.

The one mentioned in her letter.

I opened the paper.

It was a child’s handwriting.

Oliver’s handwriting.

But the words were copied from somewhere else.

*If something happens to me, tell Daniel to look behind the photograph.*

I looked at him.

“Which photograph?””

He pointed.

“Mom’s favorite one.””

I knew immediately.

The framed photo above the fireplace.

The one of Emma holding Oliver when he was a baby.

I carried him downstairs.

Everyone was waiting.

Diana stood when she saw my face.

“What happened?””

I held up the note.

“Oliver found this.””

Her expression changed.

“Where?””

“In Emma’s book.””

Diana went pale.

“The book…”

“You know about it?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I walked to the fireplace.

The photo frame was old.

The back had never been opened.

I removed it carefully.

Behind the photograph was a small envelope taped to the wood.

Lorraine covered her mouth.

“Emma…”

I opened it.

Inside was a USB drive.

And a note.

This time, Emma’s handwriting.

“Daniel,

If you are reading this, then the person I feared was right.

They found the necklace.

They found the evidence.

But they don’t know about this.””

I looked at Diana.

She looked terrified.

I continued.

“Trust no one who tells you I was confused at the end.””

My breathing stopped.

Then I read the final line.

“The person who caused the accident is not the person you think.””

I looked up.

Nobody spoke.

Then the front door unlocked.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped inside.

A man I had never seen before.

But Diana recognized him immediately.

Her face lost all color.

“Dr. Cole…”

The doctor smiled.

May you like

And said:

“Daniel, we need to talk about your wife.””
