Chapter 2: The Secret Inside Her Bag

Diana didn’t move.

For several seconds, nobody in the ballroom even breathed.

The violinist near the entrance slowly lowered his instrument.

The guests who had been whispering stopped.

Everyone was looking at the same thing.

The silver pendant in Lorraine’s hand.

And the woman standing across from us.

My fiancée.

The woman who had spent two years convincing me she wanted to help raise my son.

“Daniel,” Diana said quickly, forcing a laugh, “this is insane.””

I stared at her.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

She pointed at Lorraine.

“She’s your ex-mother-in-law. She already hates me.””

Lorraine’s jaw tightened.

“I loved Emma. I accepted you because Daniel loved you.””

She looked at Oliver.

“But I never trusted the way you looked at that child.””

Diana’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know anything about our family.””

“No,” Lorraine replied.

“But I know what I found.””

She held up the second half of the necklace.

“When I found this inside your handbag, I thought there had to be an explanation.””

I stepped closer.

“Why was it there?””

Diana looked away.

That small movement told me everything.

“Diana.””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

A bitter laugh escaped from me.

“You don’t know how your purse has my dead wife’s necklace inside?””

She immediately became defensive.

“You’re making me look like a criminal.””

“No one said that.””

“Everyone is thinking it.””

She looked around the room.

People avoided her eyes.

That made her angrier.

“You all think you know what happened because of one necklace?””

Oliver stood beside me, clutching Emma’s pendant.

Diana noticed.

Her expression changed.

“You see? This is the problem.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You always choose him.””

The words hung in the air.

I stared at her.

“He’s my son.””

“He’s not your only responsibility.””

My hands tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Diana stepped closer.

“I thought when we got married, we would finally be a normal family.””

“We could have been.””

“No,” she said.

“Not with Emma still everywhere.””

My stomach dropped.

There it was.

The truth hiding underneath every argument.

Every complaint.

Every little comment about Oliver’s room.

Every time she suggested removing Emma’s photos.

“You weren’t trying to help him heal,” I whispered.

Diana looked away.

“You never gave me a chance.””

“I gave you everything.””

“No. You gave me a place beside you. But there was always someone else standing there.””

Oliver looked confused.

“Mom?””

Diana closed her eyes.

And I hated that my son heard the bitterness in her voice.

“Diana,” I said, “what did you do?””

She didn’t answer.

Lorraine stepped forward.

“I’ll tell him what I think happened.””

Diana glared.

“Don’t.””

Lorraine ignored her.

“After Emma died, this necklace disappeared. I searched everywhere.””

She looked at Oliver.

“Emma wore her half every day. She told me she wanted Oliver to have his half when he was old enough to understand.””

I remembered that conversation.

Emma sitting on the edge of Oliver’s bed.

Her smile.

Her tired eyes.

The way she hid her illness because she didn’t want us to be afraid.

Lorraine continued.

“Then, two years ago, Diana entered your lives.””

Diana’s face went pale.

I looked at her.

“You took it?””

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

Lorraine opened the bag again and pulled out another item.

A small velvet pouch.

My heart started pounding.

“What is that?””

Diana moved suddenly.

“Stop.””

Lorraine held it higher.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

I reached for it.

Diana grabbed my wrist.

“Daniel, don’t.””

Everyone saw.

Everyone saw the panic.

I pulled my hand away.

“What is in there?””

She whispered.

“Nothing.””

But her eyes said otherwise.

I opened the paper.

The handwriting was familiar.

Emma’s handwriting.

The room disappeared.

For a moment, I was no longer standing in a hotel ballroom.

I was back in our kitchen.

Watching Emma write birthday cards.

Watching her leave little notes in Oliver’s lunchbox.

My fingers shook as I unfolded the page.

There were only a few lines.

But they changed everything.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, something happened that made you look for the other half of my necklace.””

I stopped.

Oliver looked up at me.

“Dad?””

I kept reading.

“I need you to know something about the woman who comes after me.””

My eyes lifted toward Diana.

She looked terrified.

Lorraine whispered:

I looked back at the letter.

May you like

And the next sentence made my blood turn cold.

“Because I believe she already knows the secret I was trying to protect before I died.””
