Chapter 14: The Truth Emma Left Behind
Dr. Cole walked toward us slowly.
Beside him was a woman I recognized.
Not personally.
From photographs.
Emma’s older sister.
Claire.
I stared.
“Claire?””
She looked exhausted.
Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.
Mark looked at her.
“You brought her?””
Dr. Cole nodded.
“It’s time.””
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Claire stepped forward.
“Daniel, I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I backed away.
“Everyone keeps saying sorry after lying to me.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“You deserve the truth.””
“I deserved it two years ago.””
She lowered her head.
“You’re right.””
Dr. Cole looked at Mark.
“This ends tonight.””
I laughed.
“You all sound like you’re in some kind of movie.””
Nobody smiled.
Because this wasn’t fiction.
This was my life.
My wife.
My son.
My family.
All broken by secrets.
Claire reached into her bag.
She pulled out a notebook.
Emma’s notebook.
I recognized it immediately.
“She gave this to me before she died.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because she knew someone was watching.””
My voice was quiet.
“Who?””
Claire looked at Dr. Cole.
Then Mark.
Then me.
“The hospital director.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was involved in illegal adoption arrangements.””
The world went silent.
Claire continued.
“Emma discovered that babies’ records were being altered. Families were being lied to.””
I looked at the DNA report.
“And Oliver?””
Claire nodded.
“Oliver’s records were changed.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why?””
“Because someone wanted to hide his real identity.””
I looked at Dr. Cole.
“You.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Nobody answered.
Claire looked at Mark.
Mark closed his eyes.
“I found out too late.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing.””
“I tried.””
“You manipulated my son.””
“I was trying to protect him from the people who wanted him.””
I shook my head.
“No. You wanted control.””
The pain on his face told me I was right.
Dr. Cole stepped forward.
“The person behind it all was the hospital director. He used employees to change records.””
“Why would he care about Oliver?””
Claire opened Emma’s notebook.
“Because Oliver was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She handed me the notebook.
Inside were dates.
Names.
Payments.
One name appeared repeatedly.
*Thomas Reed.*
I knew that name.
Everyone in our town knew that name.
The hospital director.
The man who spoke at Emma’s funeral.
The man who hugged me and said:
“She was a wonderful woman.””
My hands shook.
“He knew.””
Claire nodded.
“He knew Emma was close to exposing him.””
I looked at Dr. Cole.
“You helped him.””
Dr. Cole looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
The confession was quiet.
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid?””
“He threatened my family.””
I looked at him.
“So you helped destroy mine?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty didn’t make it easier.
Then Claire handed me another letter.
“Emma wrote this the night before she died.””
I opened it.
Only a few lines.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, please don’t let anger decide who you become.
Oliver needs his father.
Not a man chasing revenge.
A man who protects him.
My eyes filled.
The next line broke me.
No matter what you discover, remember this:
Love is not proven by blood.
It is proven by who stays.
I closed my eyes.
Because that was Emma.
Even at the end.
She was thinking about Oliver.
Not herself.
Not me.
Him.
Then my phone rang.
Police.
I answered.
A detective spoke quickly.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“We need you to come home immediately.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because we arrested Thomas Reed.””
I looked at everyone.
The nightmare was finally ending.
But then the detective added:
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
“We found evidence that someone else helped him.””
My eyes moved toward Mark.
Then Diana.
The detective continued:
“Your fiancée’s name was found in the investigation.””
My blood ran cold.
Diana.
No.
Not again.
I hung up.
May you like
And for the first time all night…
I didn’t know who to believe.
