Chapter 4: The Room She Wanted Erased
Diana’s words followed me down the hallway like a shadow.
“Your son already knew where it was.””
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
The ballroom noise disappeared behind me. The whispers, the shocked voices, the questions from relatives—they all became distant.
The only thing I could focus on was one thought.
Why would Diana bring Oliver into this?
I found him sitting on a bench outside the ballroom with Lorraine beside him. His small hands were wrapped around the necklace, his thumb rubbing the silver heart the way he always did when he was scared.
When he saw me, he immediately stood.
“Dad?””
I forced myself to smile.
“Hey, buddy.””
His eyes searched my face.
“Are you mad at me?””
The question hurt more than anything Diana had done.
I dropped to my knees.
“Why would I be mad at you?””
He looked down.
“Because of the necklace.””
I shook my head.
“Oliver, listen to me. Nothing about this is your fault.””
“But Diana said…”
He stopped.
I noticed the fear in his eyes.
“What did Diana say?””
Oliver looked toward the ballroom doors.
“She said I was making things difficult.””
My jaw tightened.
“When did she say that?””
He hesitated.
“Last week.””
Lorraine looked at me.
“Daniel…”
I gently touched Oliver’s shoulder.
“Tell me everything, son.””
He swallowed.
“Diana came into my room when you were working.””
My stomach turned.
“What did she do?””
“She opened Mom’s memory box.””
The hallway suddenly felt cold.
“The box from your closet?””
Oliver nodded.
“She said it was old stuff. She said I didn’t need it anymore.””
I looked at Lorraine.
She looked just as shocked as I felt.
“What happened next?””
Oliver’s voice became smaller.
“She took the necklace.””
My heart stopped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because she told me you would be disappointed.””
I closed my eyes.
That sentence broke something inside me.
Diana hadn’t just taken a necklace.
She had taken my son’s voice.
I stood slowly.
Lorraine touched my arm.
“Daniel, you need to be careful.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“People like Diana don’t admit what they’ve done when they’re cornered.””
I looked back toward the ballroom.
Through the glass doors, I could see Diana standing alone.
She looked different now.
Not like the woman I proposed to.
Like someone whose plan had collapsed.
I walked back inside.
She immediately approached me.
“Daniel, please.””
I held up my hand.
“Don’t.””
Her expression softened.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She looked around.
“Not here.””
“No.””
I pointed toward the crowd.
“Here is exactly where you should explain. You embarrassed my son in front of everyone.””
Her eyes flashed.
“You’re really going to destroy our entire future because of this?””
“Our future?””
I laughed quietly.
“You destroyed it yourself.””
She lowered her voice.
“I loved you.””
“Did you love Oliver?””
Silence.
That was the answer.
Diana looked away.
“I tried.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You tried to make him fit into the family you wanted.””
She stepped closer.
“You don’t understand what it’s like to always come second.””
I stared at her.
“You weren’t supposed to replace Emma.””
Her face hardened.
“I know.””
The bitterness in her voice surprised me.
“But everyone expected me to.””
“No one expected you to erase her.””
Diana looked toward the cake.
The pendant had been removed, but the damage remained.
The frosting was ruined.
The celebration was ruined.
Everything that was supposed to represent a beginning now looked like evidence of an ending.
Then Diana whispered:
“You want the truth?””
I said nothing.
She looked directly at me.
“Emma left behind more than that necklace.””
My heart started racing.
“What are you talking about?””
Diana reached into her purse.
But Lorraine stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Diana froze.
Lorraine’s eyes narrowed.
“We already know you hide things in there.””
Diana slowly pulled her hand back.
“You think I’m the villain.””
“I think you know something about Emma’s death.””
The room went silent.
My head snapped toward Lorraine.
“What?””
Lorraine looked at me.
“I didn’t want to say anything until I was sure.””
“Sure about what?””
She hesitated.
Then she looked at Diana.
“Emma was investigating something before she died.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Diana’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“What was she investigating?”” I asked.
Lorraine reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I found this among Emma’s things after the funeral.””
My hands went cold.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because Emma wrote on the front that it should only be opened if the necklace was ever separated.””
Everyone stared.
I took the envelope.
My name was written across it.
Daniel.
My fingers shook as I opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
One sentence that made my entire body go still.
“If Diana is wearing my ring, it means you never found out what she did.””
I looked up.
Diana was already backing away.
May you like
And she whispered:
“Daniel… don’t read the rest.””
