Chapter 13: The Night Emma Disappeared

I drove to the place where I lost my wife with one thought repeating in my mind.

Find the truth.

Not revenge.

Not anger.

Not answers that would make me feel better.

Just the truth.

Because Emma deserved that.

And Oliver deserved to know why his world had been turned upside down.

The old road looked exactly the same.

The same curve.

The same trees.

The same stretch of pavement where everyone told me Emma’s car had lost control.

For two years, I had stood here believing it was an accident.

Tonight, I saw something different.

A crime scene.

Mark’s car was already there.

He stood beside it, hands in his pockets.

Waiting.

I stepped out.

“You knew I would come.””

He looked at me.

“I knew Emma would eventually lead you here.””

My chest tightened.

“Where is she?””

Mark smiled sadly.

“That’s your first question?””

I stared at him.

“You threatened my son.””

His expression changed.

“I protected him.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You manipulated him.””

Mark looked away.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

The wind moved through the trees.

For a moment, he looked like my brother again.

The person who taught me how to ride a bike.

The person who stood beside me at my wedding.

Then he spoke.

“Emma found out.””

“Found out what?””

“That Oliver wasn’t supposed to be yours.””

The words hurt even though I expected them.

I shook my head.

“She was my wife.””

“That doesn’t answer the question.””

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

Mark sighed.

“Emma knew before you did.””

“Knew what?””

“That the hospital records were wrong.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“Oliver is my son.””

Mark didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

I stepped back.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You don’t get to rewrite my entire life because you’re angry.””

“I’m not angry.””

“Then why did you destroy everything?””

His face hardened.

“Because Emma chose you.””

There it was.

The same bitterness from the video.

“You loved her.””

Mark looked away.

“I loved her first.””

My stomach turned.

“What?””

“She knew me before she knew you.””

The realization hit me.

Not like a surprise.

Like a door opening to something I didn’t want to see.

“You were in love with my wife.””

He didn’t deny it.

“She was unhappy.””

I laughed.

“Emma loved me.””

“She loved the idea of you.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You don’t know anything about our marriage.””

“I knew she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Mark looked at the road.

“Of losing Oliver.””

I froze.

“Because of you?””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Because of the truth.””

I stared at him.

“Tell me.””

Mark was silent.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a folder.

“You want to know what Emma discovered?””

I didn’t move.

He held it out.

Inside were hospital documents.

DNA test results.

I stared at the paper.

The name.

The numbers.

Everything blurred.

Then I saw the conclusion.

*Biological relationship confirmed.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Mark’s face changed.

“That’s the part Emma never wanted you to see.””

I looked back at the paper.

Oliver was mine.

My knees almost gave out.

Mark continued.

“The test was fake.””

My head snapped up.

“What?””

“The first test.””

He pointed at the folder.

“Someone changed the results.””

My blood went cold.

“Who?””

Mark looked at me.

“Dr. Cole.””

I stared.

“But why?””

Mark smiled bitterly.

“Because he was paid.””

“By who?””

Mark didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

I already knew.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Lorraine.

*Daniel, I found something in Emma’s old files. You need to come home now.*

I looked back at Mark.

“You’re not the one who did it.””

He smiled.

Finally.

“You’re starting to understand.””

“But you knew.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me suffer.””

His expression cracked.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“You killed Emma.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Mark’s face changed.

“I didn’t.””

“Then what happened that night?””

He looked toward the road.

And for the first time…

I saw fear.

“Emma wasn’t driving away from someone.””

I waited.

“She was driving to someone.””

My breath caught.

“Who?””

Mark looked at me.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father died ten years ago.””

Mark nodded.

“I know.””

Then he handed me one final piece of paper.

A photo.

A picture of Emma’s car.

And written on the back:

*The person who caused the crash was never at the scene.*

I looked at Mark.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, headlights appeared behind us.

A car stopped.

Dr. Cole stepped out.

And this time…

He wasn’t alone.
