The Necklace She Tried to Bury / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Secret Emma Took to Her Grave

Diana didn’t answer.

She just stared at the medical file sitting on my table.

Like it was something alive.

Something dangerous.

I had seen Diana angry.

I had seen her jealous.

I had seen her desperate.

But I had never seen fear like this.

“Open it,” I said.

She shook her head.

“Daniel…”

“Open it.””

Her eyes met mine.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My chest tightened.

“Find out what?””

She looked toward the stairs.

Toward where Oliver was sleeping.

Then she whispered:

“Emma was protecting him.””

The words should have comforted me.

Instead, they terrified me.

I opened the file.

The first page was a medical report.

The patient name wasn’t Emma.

It wasn’t Diana.

It was Oliver.

My hands froze.

“Why is my son’s name on this?””

Diana sat down slowly.

“Because Emma discovered something after he was born.””

I looked at the report.

The medical terminology meant nothing.

But one sentence stood out.

*Genetic testing recommended.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Diana wiped her tears.

“Emma found out there was a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Oliver’s original birth records were changed.””

The room felt like it tilted.

“What?””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No. Don’t do this.””

Diana looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I pushed the file away.

“My son is my son.””

“I know.””

“Then why are we talking about this?””

“Because someone else knows.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She looked toward the closed door.

“Dr. Cole.””

I felt anger rising.

“Explain.””

Diana took a deep breath.

“Emma discovered irregularities in the hospital records. Someone had altered documents.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I expect you to believe Emma.””

That stopped me.

Because this was the one thing I couldn’t ignore.

Emma.

My wife.

The woman who knew Oliver better than anyone.

The woman who would never create fear without a reason.

I looked at the report again.

“Did Emma know?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Months before she died.””

My voice became quiet.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Diana looked down.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Of what would happen if the wrong person found out.””

I thought about the message.

*Your son knows more than you think.*

My hands tightened.

“What does Oliver know?””

Diana’s face changed.

“I don’t know.””

“Then why did you say he knows?””

“Because Emma told me.””

I froze.

“What did she tell you?””

Diana looked toward the stairs.

“She said Oliver saw something.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“Something from the night she died.””

I stood immediately.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Emma made me promise.””

“A promise?””

“She said if something happened to her, I had to protect Oliver until I knew who was responsible.””

I stared at her.

“You protected him by lying to me?””

“I protected him by keeping him alive.””

The sentence hit differently.

Because suddenly, I remembered everything.

The necklace.

The hidden letters.

The fear in Emma’s handwriting.

She had been fighting something while I thought she was simply sick.

I looked at the file again.

“What does the DNA test say?””

Diana didn’t answer.

“Diana.””

She whispered:

“I never saw the final results.””

“Why?””

“Because Emma took them.””

“Where?””

Diana pointed toward the flash drive.

“Maybe there.””

I plugged it in.

One folder appeared.

The name made my blood run cold.

*FOR DANIEL ONLY*

I opened it.

Inside was one video file.

Emma appeared on screen.

My breath stopped.

She looked weak.

But alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel.””

I covered my mouth.

Hearing her voice after two years almost broke me.

“If you’re watching this, then something happened.””

A tear rolled down my face.

Emma continued.

“I’m sorry I kept secrets from you.””

She looked away.

Then back at the camera.

“But I needed to protect Oliver.””

I leaned closer.

Her next words changed everything.

“Daniel, the man who caused my accident wasn’t trying to kill me.””

A pause.

“He was trying to take Oliver.””

The video glitched.

Then Emma said the name.

The name I never expected.

The name that made Diana gasp.

“Because Oliver’s biological father is…”

The screen went black.

I stared at the laptop.

“No.””

Diana whispered:

“Oh my God.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed at the screen.

The file had not ended.

A second video appeared automatically.

The title was:

*THE PERSON WHO STARTED THIS*

And the thumbnail showed a man standing beside Emma.

A man I recognized.

May you like

A man I had trusted.

My own brother.
