The Necklace She Tried to Bury / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: The Brother Who Betrayed Me

I didn’t speak.

I couldn’t.

The thumbnail remained on the screen.

Mark.

My brother.

My best friend.

The person who stood beside me when Emma died.

The person who held my shoulder at the funeral.

The person who told me:

“We’ll get through this.””

My stomach turned.

“No.””

Diana looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stood up.

“That’s impossible.””

But my body remembered before my mind accepted it.

Mark had always known everything.

The house.

The finances.

The medical appointments.

The details of Emma’s illness.

Everything.

The video started.

The image shook slightly.

Emma’s voice came through.

“Daniel, I don’t know how much time I have.””

She looked exhausted.

“But I need you to know the truth.””

The camera moved.

Then Mark appeared.

Not the Mark I knew.

This Mark looked angry.

Cold.

Emma was standing across from him.

“You promised me you would leave him alone.””

Mark laughed.

“You still think you’re in control.””

My breathing stopped.

Diana covered her mouth.

The video continued.

Emma stepped closer.

“Daniel will find out.””

Mark smiled.

“Find out what? That you lied to him?””

Emma’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Mark leaned forward.

“You never told him the truth about Oliver.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

There it was.

The secret.

The one Emma had hidden.

The one everyone kept circling around.

Mark continued:

“You built this perfect little family on a lie.””

Emma shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I understand perfectly.””

He stepped closer.

“You chose him.””

The video ended.

I stared at the screen.

That was it.

Only thirty seconds.

But it was enough.

Enough to destroy everything.

Diana looked at me.

“Daniel…”

I couldn’t hear her.

All I could hear was Mark’s voice.

You chose him.

I picked up my phone.

Called him.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

No answer.

“He’s not picking up,” I whispered.

Diana looked scared.

“He knows.””

“What?””

“He knows we found out.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

She looked at the flash drive.

“Because someone knew where Emma hid the evidence.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

The floorboard.

The photograph.

The necklace.

The drive.

Someone had been searching.

Someone knew.

I ran upstairs.

“Dad?””

Oliver stood at the top of the stairs.

He looked scared.

I immediately softened.

“Hey.””

“Is Uncle Mark here?””

I froze.

“Why would you ask that?””

Oliver looked confused.

“Because he came to my room after Mom died.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Diana came closer.

“Oliver, what did he do?””

Oliver looked down.

“He told me not to tell you.””

My voice became quiet.

“Tell me what?””

Oliver’s eyes filled with tears.

“He said Mom made a mistake.””

I felt sick.

“What mistake?””

“He said she shouldn’t have trusted people.””

I knelt.

“Oliver, what else?””

He thought.

Then whispered:

“He had Mom’s necklace.””

Nobody moved.

“Which necklace?””

“The other one.””

My breath disappeared.

“The missing half?””

Oliver nodded.

“He told me it was his.””

Diana stepped back.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No. I swear.””

Oliver continued.

“He put it in his pocket.””

I stood.

“When was this?””

“After Mom died.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His face crumpled.

“Because Uncle Mark said if I told you, you would lose me too.””

I felt rage unlike anything before.

Not because Mark betrayed me.

Because he used my son’s fear.

I grabbed my phone.

This time, a message appeared.

From Mark.

One sentence.

*You finally found Emma’s videos.*

My blood ran cold.

Another message appeared.

*Now ask yourself why she never told you Oliver wasn’t yours.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message came.

*Meet me where Emma died. Alone.*

Diana grabbed my arm.

“Don’t go.””

I looked at her.

“I need answers.””

“You don’t know what he wants.””

I looked toward Oliver.

Then at Emma’s necklace.

“I know exactly what he wants.””

I picked up my coat.

And as I walked toward the door, my phone buzzed one final time.

A photo appeared.

A photo of Mark standing beside Emma’s car on the night she died.

May you like

And underneath it were four words:

*You never knew your brother.*
