Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Never Gone

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

I stared at it on the desk.

The room became completely silent.

Because there was no mistake.

The man standing beside my father was Adrian’s father.

Thomas Vale.

The same man everyone believed had died twenty years ago.

The same man Adrian had told me disappeared after his family lost everything.

The same man whose name had haunted Adrian’s childhood.

I picked up the photo again.

“Explain.””

Nobody spoke.

My mother sat down slowly.

Daniel looked between us.

Adrian was gone.

But somehow, his presence remained.

“What is this?”” I asked.

My mother closed her eyes.

“A mistake.””

“No.””

My voice was sharper.

“This is not a mistake.””

I pointed at the picture.

“This is a man who was supposedly dead.””

My mother looked exhausted.

“He wasn’t.””

The words landed like a blow.

“What?””

“Thomas Vale survived.””

I stared at her.

“For twenty years?””

“Yes.””

“Where was he?””

My mother didn’t answer.

That was when I understood.

She knew.

She had always known.

“You knew.””

A tear appeared in her eyes.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“How many lies have I been living?””

“Evelyn—”

“No.””

My voice broke.

Not from sadness.

From betrayal.

“My husband lied to me.””

“My family lied to me.””

“Who else knew?””

Nobody answered.

And silence was becoming the answer I hated most.

Daniel opened his laptop.

“I found something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Adrian’s recent transactions.””

He turned the screen toward me.

There were payments.

Large payments.

To a company registered overseas.

The owner name was hidden.

But the date caught my attention.

The payments began three months after my father died.

My heart sank.

“Adrian wasn’t working alone.””

Daniel nodded.

“No.””

I stared at the numbers.

“How long?””

“At least three years.””

Three years.

The same amount of time I had believed my marriage was finally becoming stronger.

The same amount of time Adrian had been telling me he was under pressure at work.

The same amount of time Vanessa had been appearing in his life.

I whispered:

“He planned everything.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Maybe.””

I looked back at the photo.

“No.””

I understood now.

Adrian’s affair.

His public humiliation.

His attempt to destroy my reputation.

It wasn’t the main attack.

It was a distraction.

He wanted me emotional.

He wanted me isolated.

He wanted me too hurt to investigate.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A deep voice replied.

“Evelyn Whitmore.””

I froze.

Nobody called me by my full name except people who knew my family.

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

“You really are your father’s daughter.””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

The voice became colder.

“The man your husband has been trying to find.””

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately started tracing the call.

“Thomas Vale?””

Silence.

Then:

“You know my name.””

My mother stood up.

Her face drained of color.

“No…”

The voice continued.

“Your father stole everything from me.””

I stepped closer to the desk.

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then:

“What I should have taken twenty years ago.””

The call ended.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Evelyn…”

I turned.

“What?””

His expression was serious.

“We found the location.””

“Where?””

He hesitated.

Then showed me the address.

It was a place I knew.

A place that belonged to my family.

A place my father had forbidden me to visit since I was a child.

The old Valecrest estate.

The one abandoned after a mysterious fire.

The one everyone said was empty.

May you like

Except now there was someone living inside.

And they had been waiting for me.
