Chapter 4: The Marriage Contract
The paper shook slightly in my hands.
Not because I was afraid.
Because every word on that page rewrote six years of my life.
“Gain Evelyn’s trust first.””
Four words.
Four simple words.
But they carried the weight of every memory I had ever protected.
The first time Adrian brought me coffee at sunrise.
The night he sat beside my hospital bed after my car accident.
The day he proposed beneath the old oak tree on my family’s estate.
I had spent years believing those moments were proof of love.
Now I wondered if they were rehearsals.
Daniel watched me carefully from across the car.
“Evelyn, say something.””
I looked up.
“Who found this?””
“One of our internal investigators.””
“From where?””
“Adrian’s office.””
I closed the folder.
“No.””
Daniel frowned.
“No?””
“If Adrian had something this important hidden in his office, he wanted someone to find it.””
The silence that followed told me he knew I was right.
Adrian had always been careful.
Too careful.
The man who remembered every business contract but somehow forgot our anniversary.
The man who calculated every investment but claimed he never noticed Vanessa’s messages appearing on his phone.
Nothing about Adrian was accidental.
Daniel leaned back.
“You think he planted evidence?””
“I think Adrian wants me angry.””
“Why?””
“Because angry people make mistakes.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That sounds like him.””
The city lights reflected across the window as we drove away from the gala.
For the first time in years, I wasn’t thinking about my marriage.
I was thinking about survival.
When we arrived at Valecrest headquarters, the building was almost empty.
It was nearly midnight, but the executive floor was still alive with activity.
Employees whispered as I walked through the lobby.
They knew something had happened.
They had seen the news.
They had seen Adrian’s speech.
They had seen the headlines already spreading online.
“CEO Humiliates Wife During Company Celebration.””
I ignored every screen.
Every headline.
Every opinion.
At the elevator, Daniel handed me another file.
“This was recovered from Adrian’s private server.””
I stopped.
“How?””
“He didn’t expect anyone to access it.””
I opened the file.
Inside were emails.
Hundreds of them.
The earliest date was six years ago.
Before our wedding.
My eyes moved across the screen.
A message from Adrian to someone named Marcus Hale.
I recognized the name immediately.
Marcus had been Adrian’s closest advisor for years.
The email was short.
*She trusts me. The marriage will give me permanent access to Valecrest resources.*
My fingers tightened around the folder.
Another email.
*Once I control the board relationships, I won’t need Evelyn anymore.*
Another.
*Her father made the mistake of raising her to be kind. Kind people always underestimate ambition.*
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Not because I loved him anymore.
Because I realized I had loved someone who never existed.
Daniel quietly said, “I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t apologize.””
“Evelyn—”
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t need sympathy.””
I placed the folder on the table.
“I need the truth.””
Daniel nodded.
“Then there’s one more thing.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Your father knew.””
The room went silent.
“What did you say?””
“Your father suspected Adrian before he died.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because he wanted proof.””
I laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“My father spent his entire life protecting this company.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“And he watched me marry the man trying to steal it.””
“Evelyn—”
“No.””
I stood.
“I need to see his files.””
Daniel opened another cabinet and removed a sealed envelope.
“This was left with instructions.””
My name was written on the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
My father’s handwriting.
My hands froze.
I had not seen it since his funeral.
Slowly, I opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only one.
*Evelyn,*
*If you are reading this, then my fears were correct.*
My eyes blurred.
*Adrian Vale is not the man he appears to be.*
I continued reading.
*But the most dangerous thing about him is not his ambition. It is the person helping him.*
I looked at Daniel.
“The person helping him?””
Daniel nodded.
“We don’t know who yet.””
I returned to the letter.
The final sentence made my blood run cold.
*Trust no one who benefits from your downfall.*
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Daniel immediately closed the file.
Too late.
The office door opened.
And standing there was someone I never expected to see.
Someone who had been at my side for years.
Someone who knew every secret in my family.
My mother.
May you like
But she wasn’t alone.
Behind her stood Adrian.
