The Mistake He Couldn't Afford / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: The Last Move

The next morning, Valecrest headquarters looked different.

Not because the building changed.

Because I did.

For years, I had walked into that building as Adrian’s wife.

A supporter.

A quiet presence behind the scenes.

Today, I entered as the person who could destroy everyone inside it.

Employees stopped talking when I passed.

Executives avoided eye contact.

The news had spread.

Victor Hale was in control.

Adrian Vale was finished.

And Evelyn Whitmore was supposed to disappear.

They were wrong.

Daniel walked beside me.

“You’re sure?””

I looked ahead.

“Yes.””

“You know there’s a chance this fails.””

“I know.””

“And if it fails?””

I stopped.

“Then I lose everything.””

Daniel nodded.

“But you’re still doing it.””

I looked at the company logo on the wall.

“No.””

I corrected him.

“I’m taking back what was stolen.””

Inside the boardroom, Victor was already waiting.

He sat at the head of the table.

My father’s seat.

That alone told me everything.

He wanted to replace him.

He wanted everyone to see him as the new power.

Around him sat the board members.

Some looked nervous.

Others looked excited.

They had chosen the winning side.

At least, they thought they had.

Victor smiled.

“Evelyn.””

I sat across from him.

“Victor.””

“You came.””

“You expected me not to?””

He leaned back.

“I expected emotion.””

I placed a folder on the table.

“You misunderstand me.””

“Oh?””

“I’m not here because I’m angry.””

I looked at him.

“I’m here because I’m finished being patient.””

A few board members shifted.

Victor opened the folder.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

The document inside was the clause my father had hidden.

Victor looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

“From my father.””

“That’s impossible.””

I smiled.

“That’s what everyone says before they lose.””

He read the document again.

Daniel stood.

“The ownership transfer Victor filed yesterday violated a protected clause.””

A board member frowned.

“What clause?””

I answered.

“The company cannot be transferred to anyone involved in the original Valecrest conflict.””

The room went silent.

Victor’s face hardened.

“You’re bluffing.””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“You just never read the entire agreement.””

The same mistake Adrian had made.

The same mistake everyone made.

They saw what they wanted to see.

Victor stood.

“You think a piece of paper will stop me?””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I think your own actions will.””

I pressed a button on the table.

The screen behind me turned on.

Emails appeared.

Financial records.

Transfer documents.

Evidence.

Victor’s deals.

His secret payments.

His manipulation of Adrian.

The room exploded with whispers.

Victor stared at the screen.

“Where did you get those?””

I looked at Adrian.

Standing quietly near the door.

Victor’s expression changed.

“You.””

Adrian said nothing.

Victor laughed.

“So this was your plan?””

Adrian looked at me.

“No.””

He looked back at Victor.

“This was hers.””

For the first time, Victor looked uncertain.

I stood.

“You spent years believing Adrian was your weapon.””

I walked around the table.

“But you made one mistake.””

Victor stared at me.

“What?””

“You underestimated what happens when someone realizes they have nothing left to lose.””

The board members began speaking over each other.

Security entered.

Victor looked at me.

“You think this is over?””

I stopped.

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“I think it’s finally beginning.””

As Victor was escorted away, Adrian remained behind.

The room slowly emptied.

Finally, it was just us.

Six years of marriage.

Six years of memories.

Six years of lies.

He looked at me.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

I said nothing.

“I know what I did.””

Still nothing.

“But I need you to know something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His voice was quiet.

“The night I called you a mistake…”

He swallowed.

“I hated myself more than I hated you.””

I looked away.

Because part of me believed him.

But trust was not rebuilt with words.

It was rebuilt with time.

Adrian stepped closer.

“There’s something else.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Victor wasn’t the only person helping him.””

My heart sank.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian looked toward the empty boardroom.

“The person who gave Victor access to your father’s files…”

A pause.

“Was someone who still works for you.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Adrian’s expression became serious.

And then he said a name I never expected.

A name belonging to someone who had been beside me from the very beginning.

“My father wasn’t the only one who left a final secret.””

He looked at me.

“Yours did too.””

And this time…

May you like

The secret wasn’t about the past.

It was about the person standing closest to me now.
