Chapter 10: The Inheritance Nobody Knew About
The words on the page burned into my memory.
*Never trust the person who tells you they are protecting you.*
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
Because suddenly, every person around me looked different.
My mother.
Thomas Vale.
Victor Hale.
Even Adrian.
Everyone had claimed they were protecting me.
Everyone had claimed they knew what was best.
And every one of them had lied.
I looked at Victor.
“You knew about this?””
He nodded.
“For years.””
The calmness in his voice made my anger rise.
“You knew my father left something hidden, and you said nothing?””
“I was waiting.””
“For what?””
Victor looked at the document in my hand.
“For you to become strong enough to handle it.””
I laughed.
A cold, empty sound.
“That’s the same excuse everyone uses when they hide things from me.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could.
I placed the document on the table.
“What is this hidden account?””
Victor walked toward the fireplace.
“Not an account.””
He turned around.
“A control mechanism.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Victor smiled slightly.
“Robert Whitmore was many things. Arrogant. Ruthless. Brilliant.””
He looked at me.
“But he knew one thing.””
“What?””
“That people eventually betray power.””
I looked down at the document.
“So he created a backup.””
“Yes.””
Victor pointed to the final clause.
“Your father transferred ownership of a private holding structure outside Valecrest.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“A shadow company?””
Victor nodded.
“One that even the board didn’t know existed.””
I looked at him.
“And I control it?””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
“Because Robert knew if anyone discovered it while he was alive, they would come after you.””
I stared at the papers.
“Who?””
Victor’s expression became serious.
“Everyone.””
The answer felt too simple.
But somehow, it felt true.
My father hadn’t hidden this because he wanted more power.
He had hidden it because he knew someone would try to take it.
The question was who.
And how far they had already gone.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel’s security team.
I opened it.
My face changed.
“What?””
Daniel noticed.
I handed him the phone.
The message contained a photo.
Taken outside the estate.
A man standing near the gate.
Adrian.
“He’s here,” Daniel said.
My heart reacted before my mind did.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because I needed answers.
I walked outside.
Adrian stood beneath the old oak tree.
The same tree where he had proposed.
The memory hit me unexpectedly.
The smile.
The promise.
The future I thought we would have.
Then I remembered the ballroom.
The microphone.
Vanessa.
The kiss.
The humiliation.
“What are you doing here?””
Adrian looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“I need to talk to you.””
“You already talked.””
His face tightened.
“That wasn’t what it looked like.””
I almost smiled.
“Really?””
“No.””
He looked away.
“I know how it looked.””
“You destroyed me publicly.””
“I know.””
“You replaced me with another woman.””
“I know.””
“You called me a mistake.””
His silence answered everything.
I stepped closer.
“Why?””
Adrian looked at the ground.
“Because I needed you to hate me.””
The answer shocked me.
“What?””
“I needed you to leave.””
I stared at him.
“You humiliated me so I would leave?””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if someone is watching.””
I froze.
“Who?””
Adrian looked toward the house.
“Victor Hale.””
I turned.
Victor was standing near the doorway.
Watching us.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“He’s not your father’s friend.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
“He was never loyal to Robert.””
Adrian took a breath.
“He was the person who helped Robert build everything.””
I looked back at Victor.
“And?””
Adrian’s voice became almost a whisper.
“He was also the person who destroyed him.””
The wind moved through the trees.
Everything went quiet.
“Why should I believe you?””
Adrian looked at me.
“Because I found proof.””
He handed me a small flash drive.
“I was going to give this to you tonight.””
I didn’t take it.
“Then why didn’t you?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I saw you standing there.””
A pause.
“And I realized I had already hurt you enough.””
For the first time, I saw something I hadn’t seen in months.
Not arrogance.
Not manipulation.
Pain.
But pain did not erase betrayal.
I took the flash drive.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I needed the truth.
Adrian stepped back.
“Evelyn.””
I looked at him.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“The person who ordered me to destroy Valecrest…”
He swallowed.
“It was someone inside your family.””
Before I could ask who, his phone rang.
He answered.
His face immediately changed.
“What?””
A pause.
“No.””
Another pause.
Then:
“That’s impossible.””
He looked at me.
And I knew.
Something had happened.
“What is it?””
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
“The board just received proof that you are not the legal owner of the hidden company.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He looked toward Victor.
“Someone already transferred control.””
I stared at Victor.
The man who claimed he was protecting me.
The man who brought me my father’s final secret.
The man who had known everything.
May you like
And Victor simply smiled.
Because he had been waiting for this moment.
