Chapter 5: The Enemy Inside The Family
Adrian looked different.
Not broken.
Not defeated.
Angry.
The confident businessman from the stage was gone.
In his place was a man who had finally realized he had lost control.
My mother stepped into the office first.
“Evelyn.””
I stared at her.
“Why is he here?””
Adrian answered before she could.
“Because we need to talk.””
I almost laughed.
“We?””
He ignored the comment.
“You think you know what happened tonight.””
“I know enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice was low.
Controlled.
That was what scared me.
Adrian was most dangerous when he stopped pretending.
My mother looked uncomfortable.
“Evelyn, please.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew?””
Her expression changed.
A tiny movement.
But enough.
“You knew about him?””
She looked away.
That was my answer.
The room felt colder.
My mother had always been the person I trusted most after my father.
She had held my hand through every difficult moment.
She had told me Adrian was a good man.
She had encouraged me to marry him.
And now she stood beside him.
“Explain,” I said.
My mother swallowed.
“Your father was complicated.””
I stared at her.
“That’s your explanation?””
“No.””
She took a breath.
“He didn’t tell you everything about Valecrest.””
“What does that have to do with Adrian?””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Your father built an empire by making enemies.””
I looked at him.
“And you decided to become one?””
His jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
For once, Adrian had no immediate answer.
Because he was used to controlling conversations.
Not surviving them.
My mother walked toward the desk.
“Your father wasn’t innocent.””
The sentence shocked me.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“You only knew the version of him he wanted you to know.””
The anger inside me rose.
“You’re standing here defending the man who humiliated me in front of four hundred people?””
My mother’s eyes softened.
“I’m trying to stop something worse.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mrs. Whitmore, perhaps you should explain why Adrian had access to private Valecrest documents.””
She looked at him.
Then at me.
And finally, she said something I never expected.
“Because Adrian was investigating your father.””
Silence.
I looked at Adrian.
“What?””
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
“You married me to investigate my family?””
Adrian’s expression shifted.
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost worse than another lie.
“Why?””
He looked away.
“Because I believed your father destroyed mine.””
The room became still.
“My father?””
“My family lost everything because of Valecrest.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Ask your mother.””
I turned.
My mother looked down.
And that was when I understood.
There were pieces of this story everyone knew except me.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
I raised my voice.
“What happened?””
My mother finally spoke.
“Adrian’s father was involved in illegal business dealings.””
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“That’s not the whole truth.””
“No,” my mother admitted.
“It isn’t.””
I looked between them.
“What are you hiding?””
Adrian gave a humorless smile.
“The same thing your family has hidden for decades.””
Daniel quietly moved toward the computer.
“I’m going to need those records.””
My mother looked at him.
“You don’t understand what you’re opening.””
Daniel replied calmly.
“I understand exactly.””
I watched them.
My entire life had been built around one belief.
That my family protected me.
That Adrian betrayed me.
But now everything was shifting.
Maybe both things were true.
Maybe I had been surrounded by secrets from the beginning.
Adrian reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I came here because I wanted you to see this.””
I didn’t move.
“What is it?””
“Something your father never wanted you to find.””
I looked at the envelope.
Then at him.
“Why should I trust you?””
“You shouldn’t.””
The answer surprised me.
Adrian placed the envelope on the desk.
“But you should know the truth.””
He walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
“Evelyn.””
I looked up.
“For what it’s worth…”
A pause.
“I did love you.””
I almost believed him.
Almost.
Then he added:
“But I loved winning more.””
The door closed behind him.
I stared at the envelope.
My mother whispered:
“Don’t open it.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her face turned pale.
“Because once you know what’s inside, there’s no going back.””
I slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph taken twenty years earlier.
And standing beside my father was someone I recognized immediately.
May you like
Someone who should have been impossible.
Because that person was supposed to be dead.
