Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Betrayal

The name on Daniel’s message was not Vanessa.

It was not a business partner.

It was not an investor.

It was my father.

“Evelyn, we need to discuss the old Valecrest files. Adrian wasn’t just using company assets. He accessed something else.””

I stared at the screen.

For a moment, the noise of the ballroom disappeared.

My father had been gone for three years.

He had been the person who taught me everything about business.

The person who warned me never to underestimate someone who wanted power more than happiness.

And Adrian knew that.

He knew how much my father’s legacy meant to me.

I called Daniel immediately.

“What did he access?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Not over the phone.””

“Daniel.””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Your father’s private acquisition records.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””

I looked through the ballroom doors.

Adrian was still inside.

Still standing.

Still pretending he wasn’t falling apart.

But suddenly, I realized something.

Maybe this was never just about money.

Maybe Adrian’s cruelty had a purpose.

Maybe he wanted me gone.

Not just emotionally.

Legally.

I returned to the ballroom.

Adrian saw me immediately.

For a second, hope appeared in his eyes.

He thought I had changed my mind.

He thought I was coming back.

Then he noticed my expression.

The hope disappeared.

“What now?””

I walked toward him.

“What did you take from Valecrest?””

His face went blank.

Too quickly.

A normal person would have asked what I meant.

Adrian didn’t.

He already knew.

That was enough.

“What are you talking about?””

I studied him.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You didn’t ask what I meant.””

He said nothing.

Vanessa looked between us.

“Adrian?””

He ignored her.

I stepped closer.

“For six years, I defended you. I believed in you. I trusted you.””

His jaw tightened.

“And now you’re acting like I’m some criminal?””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I’m acting like I finally see you.””

The room around us disappeared.

There was only us.

The two people who had once promised forever.

The man who had once held my hand and told me he would spend his life protecting me.

And the same man who had just publicly destroyed me.

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“You should be careful, Evelyn.””

A warning.

Not an apology.

A warning.

I almost smiled.

“There he is.””

“What?””

“The real Adrian.””

His eyes darkened.

“You think you know everything.””

“No.””

I turned away.

“I think I know enough.””

As I walked toward the exit, Vanessa grabbed Adrian’s arm.

“What is she talking about?””

Adrian pulled away.

“Nothing.””

But his face said otherwise.

Outside, Daniel was waiting beside the car.

He handed me a folder.

“Your father kept this separate from all other records.””

I opened it.

Inside was a document I had never seen before.

A transfer agreement.

A signature.

A date.

Three months before Adrian and I got married.

My hands went cold.

Because the document revealed something impossible.

Adrian had known about Valecrest’s ownership structure before our wedding.

He had known exactly who I was.

He had known exactly what I controlled.

And suddenly every memory looked different.

The romantic dinners.

The perfect words.

The way he insisted on protecting me.

Was it love?

Or was it a strategy?

Daniel watched my face carefully.

“There’s more.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He handed me another page.

“This was found hidden in Adrian’s private office.””

I read the first line.

And my breath stopped.

It wasn’t a business document.

It was a plan.

A plan written years ago.

A plan with my name at the top.

And beneath it were four words that made my hands shake:

“Gain Evelyn’s trust first.””

I looked back toward the ballroom.

Adrian was no longer the man who betrayed me tonight.

He was something far more dangerous.

Someone who had been planning this from the beginning.

And I finally understood the truth.

My husband didn’t accidentally destroy our marriage.

May you like

He married me to destroy something much bigger.

Me.
