Chapter 13: The Loyal Person Who Betrayed Me
The name Adrian gave me stayed in my mind.
Not because I believed him.
Because I was afraid I did.
For six years, I had built my life around certain truths.
My mother loved me.
My father protected me.
My husband betrayed me.
Now every one of those truths had cracks running through them.
And the person standing closest to me had become the hardest one to identify.
“Who?”” I asked again.
Adrian looked at me.
“I can’t tell you without proof.””
I stared at him.
“After everything that happened, you’re still asking me to trust you?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I’m asking you to investigate.””
That surprised me.
Adrian had spent years manipulating information.
Now he was telling me to find my own answers.
“Why?””
His expression changed.
“Because the person we’re looking for is someone who knows you better than anyone.””
My stomach tightened.
Daniel entered the room carrying a tablet.
“I found something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He turned the screen toward us.
A list of recent access records appeared.
Someone had entered restricted Valecrest archives three months before Adrian’s public betrayal.
Someone with authorized clearance.
Someone who didn’t need to break in.
I read the name.
My breath stopped.
The account belonged to:
Claire Whitmore.
My mother.
“No.””
The word left my mouth before I could stop it.
Daniel looked at me carefully.
“I know what this looks like.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She wouldn’t.””
Adrian said nothing.
That hurt more than an accusation.
Because silence meant he had considered it.
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected my mother?””
“I suspected everyone.””
That answer should have comforted me.
It didn’t.
Because everyone had become a suspect.
I left the boardroom and drove straight to my mother’s house.
The same house where I grew up.
The same kitchen where she taught me how to cook.
The same living room where she hugged me after my first heartbreak.
Now every room felt like a crime scene.
She was sitting by the window when I arrived.
As if she had been waiting.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
My mother looked tired.
“Yes.””
I stood frozen.
“How long?””
She looked down.
“Long enough.””
The answer broke something inside me.
“How long is long enough?””
She whispered:
“Since before your wedding.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain was different this time.
Not shock.
Not anger.
Just exhaustion.
“You knew Adrian had a plan.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he was using me.””
“Yes.””
My voice rose.
“Then why did you let me marry him?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because I believed I could control the damage.””
I stared at her.
“You thought you could control my life?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I thought I could protect you.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.””
She stood.
“Evelyn, listen to me.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I’m tired of listening to people explain why hurting me was necessary.””
The room went silent.
Then my mother said something I never expected.
“Your father wasn’t the one who created the hidden company.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was.””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“The person who taught him everything.””
I felt confused.
“Who?””
My mother looked at me.
“The person who raised him.””
I froze.
“His father?””
“No.””
She whispered the answer.
“Your grandfather.””
The world seemed to tilt.
My grandfather.
The man who built the foundation of Valecrest.
The man everyone described as a visionary.
“What does that mean?””
My mother sat down.
“It means your family’s secrets go back much further than Adrian.””
She opened a drawer.
Inside was a small box.
“I kept this because your father asked me to.””
I stared at it.
“You said you didn’t know everything.””
“I didn’t.””
She pushed the box toward me.
“But I knew enough.””
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was my father’s.
I opened it.
*Evelyn,*
*If you have reached this point, then everyone you trusted has failed you in some way.*
I swallowed.
*But remember this: betrayal does not always come from enemies. Sometimes it comes from people who are trying to protect you from the truth.*
I continued reading.
*The person who knows the complete story is not Victor. Not Adrian. Not your mother.*
My hands tightened.
Then I reached the final line.
*It is the person who has been protecting Valecrest since before you were born.*
I looked up.
Daniel.
Adrian.
My mother.
Everyone was confused.
Then my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
“Evelyn.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it my entire life.
The person who had always stood behind my family.
The person who had always managed the impossible.
My father’s oldest employee.
My mentor.
The man I trusted more than anyone.
“Mr. Reeves?””
Daniel looked at me.
His face changed.
Because he heard the name.
The voice on the phone became quiet.
“Evelyn, you need to understand something.””
A pause.
“Your father never intended for you to inherit Valecrest.””
I felt cold.
“Then what did he intend?””
May you like
The answer came softly.
“He intended for you to destroy it.””
