Chapter 10: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I stood in the hallway, unable to move.

The mansion was silent.

Too silent.

The kind of silence that makes every small sound feel dangerous.

A floorboard creaked downstairs.

Then another.

I reached for my phone and quietly called security.

No answer.

I looked toward my daughters’ room.

The door was slightly open.

Four little faces appeared in the darkness.

“Daddy?””

Emma whispered.

I immediately walked toward them.

“Stay here.””

Her eyes widened.

“Are you leaving?””

That question stopped me.

Six months ago, I would have said I had work.

I would have said everything would be fine.

I would have believed money could solve anything.

But not anymore.

I knelt beside them.

“No.””

I held their hands.

“I’m not leaving.””

I closed their bedroom door and locked it.

Then I walked downstairs.

The lights in the living room were off.

Only the fireplace illuminated the room.

And standing near the window was a man.

Older.

Tired.

A face that looked like it had carried years of pain.

He turned around.

“Nathan Caldwell.””

I stared at him.

“Adrian Vale.””

The man nodded slowly.

“You know my name.””

“I know you’re supposed to be dead.””

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“That’s what Vanessa wanted everyone to believe.””

I didn’t move.

“Why should I trust you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

His answer surprised me.

“I’m not asking you to.””

He reached into his coat and placed an old envelope on the table.

“I’m asking you to listen.””

I looked at the envelope.

“Why now?””

“Because Claire is gone.””

His voice cracked.

“And because your daughters are in danger.””

The words made my hands tighten.

“What did Vanessa do?””

Adrian looked at the floor.

“She found out I was investigating her.””

“Investigating what?””

He looked at me.

“Her entire life.””

The room felt colder.

“Vanessa wasn’t the person she claimed to be.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

But nothing I could fully understand.

“She changed her name years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because she was running from what she did.””

I stepped closer.

“What did she do?””

Adrian looked toward the staircase.

“Before I tell you, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Claire was closer to the truth than anyone.””

I remembered Claire’s letter.

Her warning.

Her fear.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

Adrian nodded.

“She discovered Vanessa wasn’t after your money at first.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

“Your family.””

The word felt heavier than money.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian took a deep breath.

“Vanessa spent years studying wealthy families.””

“Studying?””

“She looked for people with influence. People who could protect her secrets.””

My stomach tightened.

“And Claire?””

“She got suspicious.””

Adrian looked down.

“Your wife was the first person who saw through her.””

I walked toward the window.

Snow covered the garden where Claire used to play with the girls.

“She tried to tell me.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“I didn’t listen.””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The guilt was already there.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

I turned instantly.

“Stay here.””

I ran toward the staircase.

At the top was Vanessa.

Standing beside my daughters’ room.

My heart stopped.

“What are you doing?””

She looked at me calmly.

“I wanted to talk.””

“You came near my children?””

“I’m their family too.””

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“You’re not.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked wounded.

Then angry.

“You really think Claire was perfect?””

“I think my daughters deserve the truth.””

She smiled.

“Then ask Adrian why he disappeared.””

I looked back toward the living room.

Adrian was gone.

Only the envelope remained.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You’re finally asking questions.””

I stared at her.

“And you’re finally scared.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

“Do not trust Adrian. He is the reason Claire died.””

I looked at the screen.

Then at Vanessa.

Because suddenly I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Someone was still controlling the story.

And I didn’t know who was telling the truth.
