Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Claire’s Secret

The woman standing outside my gate looked like a ghost from my past.

Not because I knew her.

Because I knew her face.

She had Claire’s eyes.

The same eyes that used to soften whenever our daughters laughed.

The same eyes that looked at me the night before our wedding and told me, “Nathan, promise me we will always choose family first.””

I stepped closer.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at the mansion behind me.

“My name is Evelyn Hart.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way she said it made my chest tighten.

“Claire never mentioned you.””

A painful smile crossed her face.

“She wasn’t allowed to.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked around the snowy driveway.

“She knew Vanessa was dangerous.””

I shook my head.

“No. Vanessa was her friend.””

“Exactly.””

Her answer came quietly.

“That’s why Claire trusted her.””

The wind blew harder.

I looked back toward the mansion.

The place where my daughters were sleeping.

The place where I had brought Vanessa into our lives.

“Tell me everything.””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she reached into her coat and pulled out an old envelope.

“Claire gave me this before she died.””

My hands immediately reached for it.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because Claire made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

“That I only give it to you when Vanessa reveals who she really is.””

I stared at her.

“She knew this would happen?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She was afraid you would believe Vanessa over her.””

Those words hurt.

Because I knew why.

I had defended Vanessa before.

Every time Claire said something felt wrong, I called it grief.

Every time she worried about the girls, I told her she was overthinking.

I had chosen comfort over truth.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing beside a man.

The same man from the wooden box my daughters found.

But this time, there was something different.

On the back of the photograph was a name.

“Adrian Vale.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“Who is he?””

She swallowed.

“Vanessa’s first husband.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“She was married before?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Evelyn looked away.

“And he disappeared.””

The silence felt heavy.

“Disappeared?””

“No one ever proved what happened.””

I stared at the photograph.

My mind raced.

“Why would Claire know this?””

“Because she found financial records.””

“What records?””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Adrian was investigating Vanessa before he disappeared.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“And Claire continued his investigation?””

“She believed Vanessa was hiding something.””

I looked toward the mansion.

The lights from the ballroom were still on.

A reminder of everything I had missed.

“Why didn’t Claire tell me?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She tried.””

That sentence destroyed me.

“She called you three times that week.””

I looked down.

Three calls.

I remembered.

I had been in meetings.

I had ignored them.

“I told her I would call back.””

Evelyn nodded.

“But you never did.””

The truth hurt because it was simple.

I had no excuse.

A sound came from behind us.

The mansion door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

She wasn’t wearing her party dress anymore.

Her face was cold.

“You really should leave.””

Evelyn turned.

“Still pretending?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“I knew Claire longer than you knew Nathan.””

Vanessa stepped outside.

“You think he’ll believe you?””

She looked at me.

“He doesn’t know you.””

I stayed silent.

Vanessa noticed.

And for the first time, she looked afraid.

“Nathan?””

I looked at Evelyn.

Then Vanessa.

“Why did you hide your first marriage?””

Vanessa froze.

That was my answer.

Her silence said more than words.

She quickly recovered.

“You went digging through old lies?””

“No.””

I held up the photograph.

“Your lies came looking for me.””

Her face changed.

A mix of anger and fear.

Then she whispered:

“You have no idea what Claire discovered.””

I stepped forward.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa stared at me.

And smiled.

A cold, confident smile.

“Ask your daughters what Claire gave them before she died.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

But Vanessa had already walked back inside.

May you like

And I realized something terrifying.

My daughters knew more than they had told me.
