Chapter 6: The Truth Claire Left Behind

I drove home faster than I ever had.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was terrified.

For years, I had accepted Claire’s death as something tragic.

Something impossible.

Something I could never change.

But now someone was telling me the woman I loved might have left this world carrying a secret.

When I arrived at the mansion, Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

“You went through my finances.””

I stopped.

“How did you know?””

She smiled.

“You always were predictable when you were emotional.””

I stared at her.

“You took money from the girls.””

Her expression changed.

“Careful.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“I’m done being careful.””

Vanessa stood.

“You think you know everything because you found some paperwork?””

“I found my daughters eating spoiled food.””

For the first time, she looked angry.

“They are alive, aren’t they?””

The sentence made my blood run cold.

I looked at her.

“What did you just say?””

She immediately corrected herself.

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Yes, it was.””

She looked away.

And that was enough.

I walked upstairs.

The girls were in the playroom.

They had new blankets.

Warm pajamas.

Food waiting.

Simple things.

Things they should have always had.

Emma ran toward me.

“Daddy!””

I caught her.

“Hey.””

She smiled.

“Are we staying?””

The question froze me.

“Staying?””

“With you.””

I hugged her tighter.

“Yes.””

She whispered:

“Forever?””

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.””

But even as I promised her, I knew I had to uncover the truth.

That night, I opened the old storage room.

The one Vanessa had emptied after Claire died.

Boxes were missing.

Photos were gone.

Documents were scattered.

Then I found something hidden behind an old painting.

A small metal container.

Inside was Claire’s handwriting.

My hands shook.

The first page was dated two weeks before her accident.

“Nathan, if something happens to me, do not trust anyone who tells you I was careless.””

I stopped breathing.

I kept reading.

“Vanessa knows things about my family that I never told you. She came into our lives for a reason.””

I heard a sound behind me.

A floorboard.

I turned.

Nobody was there.

But the door slowly moved.

Someone had been standing outside.

I grabbed the papers and stepped into the hallway.

“Who’s there?””

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Running away.

I followed them toward the staircase.

At the bottom, I saw a figure disappear through the back entrance.

A woman.

Not Vanessa.

Older.

Dark coat.

The same woman from the security report.

Claire’s sister.

I ran outside.

“Wait!””

She stopped near the gate.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she turned.

Her eyes looked exactly like Claire’s.

“You finally came home, Nathan.””

My heart pounded.

“Who are you?””

She looked toward the mansion.

“Someone who tried to warn Claire.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

The woman’s expression broke.

“Because she thought you wouldn’t believe her.””

I stepped closer.

“Believe what?””

She looked at me.

Then whispered:

“That Vanessa didn’t just take your money.””

May you like

A cold wind passed between us.

“She was trying to take your daughters too.””
