Chapter 9: The Fight For My Daughters

The door opened slowly.

Vanessa stood there.

No tears.

No fake smile.

No performance.

Just anger.

“You don’t understand what you found.””

I stepped between her and my daughters.

“I understand enough.””

She looked at the papers in my hand.

“You think Claire was innocent?””

The question shocked me.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa walked into the room.

“Your wife had secrets too.””

I stared at her.

“Don’t use Claire to defend yourself.””

“I’m not defending myself.””

She looked around the room.

“I’m telling you that Claire was not the person you thought she was.””

My daughters moved closer to me.

I lowered my voice.

“Leave.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You would choose strangers over me?””

“No.””

I looked at Emma.

“I’m choosing my children.””

That hurt her.

I saw it.

But it was not sadness.

It was losing control.

“You have no idea what happens next.””

I held up the documents.

“Then explain.””

She remained silent.

“Explain the fake identity.””

Nothing.

“Explain Adrian Vale.””

Her expression changed.

“Who told you that name?””

I knew then.

I had found the truth.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You need to be careful, Nathan.””

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

She smiled.

“It’s advice.””

I turned away.

“Security will escort you out.””

For the first time, she looked genuinely shocked.

“You would throw me out?””

“You abandoned my daughters.””

Her face hardened.

“You were gone too.””

The words hit me.

Because they were partly true.

I looked down.

“Yes.””

I admitted it.

“I was.””

Vanessa seemed surprised.

“I failed them.””

I looked back at her.

“But I came home.””

The room became silent.

“And I’m staying.””

That night, I moved the girls into my bedroom.

Not because they were scared.

Because I was.

I couldn’t understand how close I had come to losing them.

At midnight, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Nathan Caldwell?””

“Yes.””

“You found the room.””

My entire body went still.

“Who is this?””

“You don’t have much time.””

I stood.

“What are you talking about?””

The voice lowered.

“Vanessa knows you found the records.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“The man Vanessa told everyone disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“Adrian?””

The line went silent.

Then the voice returned.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

The answer came in a whisper.

“Alive.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“Why didn’t you come forward?””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“Because Vanessa made sure everyone believed I was dead.””

The call suddenly ended.

I stood frozen in the dark hallway.

Then I heard another sound.

A door closing downstairs.

May you like

Someone was inside the house.

And they weren’t alone.
