Chapter 5: The Missing Millions

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

I didn’t sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my daughters sitting in that cold room.

Four little girls.

Waiting for someone to notice.

I sat beside their beds until they woke up.

All four of them were sleeping together.

They had refused to separate.

“Daddy?””

Emma opened her eyes.

“You stayed?””

I smiled.

“Yes.””

“Even when you had work?””

I felt a painful knot in my chest.

“Yes.””

She smiled slightly.

“Good.””

That one word hurt more than anything.

Because I realized how little they had asked for.

Not toys.

Not vacations.

Not expensive gifts.

Just me.

After breakfast, I called my company’s chief financial officer.

His name was Marcus Bell.

He had worked beside me for eight years.

“Nathan?””

His voice changed when he answered.

“You’re back?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Is everything okay?””

“No.””

Another pause.

“Marcus, I need you to check every payment connected to my household.””

“Your household?””

“Everything Vanessa approved.””

The silence lasted too long.

“Marcus?””

Finally, he spoke.

“Nathan… you should come to the office.””

I looked toward my daughters.

“I need answers today.””

“You need to see this in person.””

Two hours later, I sat inside my private office at Caldwell Systems.

Marcus placed a folder on my desk.

Not because he wanted to be dramatic.

Because his hands were shaking.

“What is it?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I found irregular transfers.””

“How much?””

He looked down.

“Almost two million dollars.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“From where?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Your family trust.””

The trust Claire and I created for the girls.

The money meant for their education.

Their future.

Their security.

“Who authorized it?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

“Marcus.””

He finally looked at me.

“Vanessa.””

My chair felt suddenly too small.

“When?””

“Over the last six months.””

The same six months I was away.

The same six months my daughters were eating rotten bread.

I stood.

“She stole from my children?””

Marcus quickly raised his hands.

“I’m not saying that legally. I’m saying the transfers were made to accounts connected to her.””

I walked to the window.

Below me, thousands of employees moved through the city.

People thought I had everything.

A company.

A mansion.

A perfect family.

They didn’t know my daughters had been cold.

They didn’t know my wife’s final warning was hidden in a drawer.

They didn’t know I had failed the one job that mattered.

Protect them.

My phone rang.

It was the security manager at my mansion.

I answered immediately.

“Mr. Caldwell?””

“What happened?””

“There’s something you need to know.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“The woman who visited your home last night.””

“What woman?””

The security manager lowered his voice.

“She wasn’t a guest.””

I stood still.

“What are you talking about?””

“We found her name in the old visitor records.””

“Who is she?””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“Claire Caldwell’s sister.””

My breath stopped.

“My wife’s sister died years ago.””

“That’s what we thought.””

I gripped the phone.

“Send me everything.””

The security manager hesitated.

“Mr. Caldwell…”

“What?””

“There is one more thing.””

“What?””

His voice became quieter.

“She left a message for you.””

My heart raced.

“What message?””

He paused.

May you like

Then said:

“She said Claire never died believing the accident was an accident.””
