Chapter 12: The Last Person Claire Saw

I stared at the photograph until my vision blurred.

Claire.

The woman I loved.

The mother of my daughters.

The person I thought I had lost forever.

But the message changed everything.

She didn’t die alone.

Someone was there.

Someone knew.

Someone had hidden the truth.

I took the photograph downstairs and placed it on the table.

Evelyn arrived twenty minutes later.

When she saw the picture, her face changed.

“You found this where?””

“Outside my daughters’ room.””

Her expression turned serious.

“Nathan, you need to leave this house.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You understand Vanessa is dangerous. You don’t understand how far she will go.””

I looked toward the staircase.

“My daughters are upstairs.””

Evelyn became quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Claire was protecting them.””

“From Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Evelyn sat down.

“Claire found out Vanessa had been watching your family long before she met you.””

My stomach tightened.

“How long?””

“Years.””

I felt sick.

“She planned this?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Claire discovered Vanessa had created relationships with wealthy families before.””

“To marry them?””

“Not always.””

“Then what?””

Evelyn looked at the photograph.

“She wanted access.””

“To what?””

“Information.””

The answer confused me.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa collected secrets.””

I frowned.

“Secrets?””

“Secrets that could destroy powerful people.””

I thought about my company.

My reputation.

My name.

“She used those secrets as protection.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She always made sure people were afraid to expose her.””

I stood.

“And Claire found proof.””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Evelyn looked toward the ceiling.

“Nathan…”

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Claire hid it somewhere only you would find.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Apparently Claire knew me better than I knew myself.””

Evelyn looked at me sadly.

“She loved you.””

I looked away.

“I wasn’t there.””

“You came back.””

“Too late.””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not for your daughters.””

Those words stayed with me.

Not for my daughters.

That was the only thing that mattered.

Later that afternoon, I gathered the girls in the living room.

“I need to ask you something.””

They looked nervous.

“Did Mommy ever talk about a special place?””

The girls thought quietly.

Then Grace raised her hand like she was in school.

“Mommy had a place.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

She pointed toward the fireplace.

“Behind the Christmas tree.””

I moved immediately.

Behind the old decorations was a small wooden panel.

I had lived in this house for years.

I never knew it existed.

Inside was a tiny compartment.

And inside that compartment was a key.

Another key.

I looked at the girls.

“Mommy left this?””

Emma nodded.

“She said Daddy would find it when he was ready.””

My hands shook.

I took the key.

It had a small engraving.

Three letters.

C.C.

Claire Caldwell.

I knew exactly where it belonged.

The old family safe in my office.

The safe I had never opened after Claire died.

Because I was afraid of what was inside.

That night, I entered my office alone.

I placed the key into the lock.

It turned.

Inside was a single file.

No money.

No jewelry.

Only one document.

The title at the top made my blood freeze.

“Vanessa Caldwell — Complete Investigation.””

I opened the first page.

And the final sentence Claire wrote was waiting for me.

“Nathan, if you are reading this, you need to know the woman living in our home was never trying to become your wife.””

I turned the page.

May you like

The next line was worse.

“She was trying to become the mother of our daughters.””
