Chapter 13: The Plan Vanessa Buried For Years

I stared at Claire’s words until the ink seemed to move.

She was trying to become the mother of our daughters.

Those words were impossible to ignore.

I turned every page of the file.

And with every sentence, the woman I thought I knew became someone else.

Vanessa had spent years creating a perfect image.

Kind.

Elegant.

Generous.

She volunteered at charities.

She donated to children’s programs.

She knew exactly how to make people trust her.

But Claire had discovered something hidden beneath the image.

Vanessa studied families.

She learned their habits.

Their weaknesses.

Their private struggles.

She didn’t enter people’s lives randomly.

She waited.

She watched.

And then she became exactly what they needed.

I reached the final pages.

There were notes from Claire.

“Vanessa doesn’t want wealth alone. Wealth can be replaced. What she wants is control.””

My hands tightened around the papers.

Then I found a section about my daughters.

Claire had written:

“She watches Emma, Lily, Sophie, and Grace differently. She doesn’t see them as children. She sees them as the last connection to Nathan.””

I stopped reading.

A cold feeling moved through me.

Vanessa wasn’t just after money.

She wanted my family.

My name.

My children.

A knock came from the office door.

I quickly closed the file.

“Who is it?””

Marcus stepped inside.

“Nathan.””

His face was serious.

“I found more.””

I looked at him.

“How much more?””

He placed a folder on my desk.

“Vanessa had been preparing legal documents.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of documents?””

“Guardianship papers.””

I stared at him.

“For my daughters?””

Marcus nodded.

“She had plans to become their official guardian if something happened to you.””

The room felt smaller.

“She planned for me to disappear?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I looked at the file again.

Claire knew.

She had known.

And I almost lost everything because I refused to see it.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Nathan.””

Vanessa’s voice.

Calm.

Almost cheerful.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

A pause.

“No.””

Her voice changed.

“You’re at the office.””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

She ignored the question.

“You found Claire’s file.””

Silence.

“How?””

“I know my way around that house.””

The way she said it made my skin crawl.

“You need to understand something, Nathan.””

“What?””

“Claire was always emotional.””

I clenched my jaw.

“Don’t talk about her.””

“She was afraid of losing you.””

“You caused that fear.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice became colder.

“She created it herself.””

I stood.

“You have five minutes to leave my property.””

She laughed softly.

“You still think this is about property.””

“What is it about?””

The line went quiet.

Then she said:

“It’s about the girls.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you do?””

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Where are they?””

Another pause.

Too long.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“Ask them what happened the night Claire died.””

The call ended.

I ran.

I ran faster than I had ever run.

Not toward Vanessa.

Toward my daughters.

They were in the living room with Evelyn.

Safe.

Alive.

But Emma was crying.

I dropped to my knees.

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

“Daddy…”

Her voice shook.

“Mommy told us something before she went away.””

I held her hands.

“What?””

She looked toward her sisters.

Then whispered:

“She said if Vanessa ever came back…”

My heart stopped.

“She told us to remember one thing.””

“What thing?””

Emma reached into her pocket.

And pulled out a tiny folded paper.

A paper Claire had hidden with her.

Emma handed it to me.

I opened it.

Only one sentence was written.

“Find the person who was with me that night.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked terrified.

Because she knew exactly who Claire meant.

The person who was with her.

The last person who saw my wife alive.

And then Evelyn whispered:

“Nathan…”

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

“It was me.””
