Chapter 7: The Father Who Never Died

The room went completely still.

For a moment, nobody even breathed.

Margaret Bell stood in the doorway holding the broken piece of my necklace like she had just placed a bomb on the table.

Then Ricardo moved.

Fast.

His hand reached for his gun.

“Don’t.””

Margaret’s voice was calm.

But the look in her eyes told me she wasn’t afraid.

Ricardo stopped.

Not because he trusted her.

Because she had said something impossible.

“Say that again.””

Margaret tilted her head.

“Your father is alive.””

The words hung in the air.

Ricardo’s face changed.

The cold, controlled expression he wore around everyone disappeared.

“My father died twenty-five years ago.””

Margaret looked at me.

“Your mother told you the same thing about your sister.””

My stomach tightened.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at me.

I stepped forward.

“Stop talking like everyone’s life is some game you’re playing.””

Margaret’s expression softened.

“I’m not playing.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at the silver piece in her hand.

“This was never just a necklace.””

She placed it beside the original heart pendant.

The two pieces connected perfectly.

A hidden compartment opened.

Dante immediately leaned closer.

Inside was a tiny piece of paper.

Not a ledger.

Not a key.

A name.

One name.

*Anthony Vance.*

My father.

I stared at it.

“No.””

Margaret looked at me.

“Yes.””

“My father died.””

“Your father disappeared.””

The distinction made my blood run cold.

Ricardo stepped closer.

“You’re saying Anthony Vance was alive?””

Margaret looked at him.

“For years.””

“Where?””

Her eyes shifted.

“That’s the question Isabella was trying to answer before she died.””

Ricardo’s jaw tightened.

“What happened to her?””

Margaret looked away.

For the first time, she looked guilty.

“I failed her.””

The room became silent.

I watched Ricardo.

The pain in his eyes was worse than anger.

“Tell me everything.””

Margaret nodded.

“Anthony Vance discovered that the Bellucci family was laundering money through legitimate companies. But he also discovered something bigger.””

“What?””

“He discovered someone inside the Moretti family was helping them.””

Dante’s expression changed.

“Impossible.””

Margaret looked at him.

“That’s what everyone said.””

Ricardo stared at her.

“Who?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to believe that Isabella spent months trying to find out.””

She looked at me.

“And she found the answer.””

I swallowed.

“What answer?””

Margaret’s voice lowered.

“That the person who betrayed both families was someone neither of you would suspect.””

Before I could ask, a loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Dante immediately pulled his weapon.

“Boss.””

Ricardo nodded.

The guards moved.

I stayed still.

Because I knew something was wrong.

Not because of the sound.

Because Margaret wasn’t surprised.

She expected it.

“Who is inside?”” Ricardo asked.

Margaret looked toward the ceiling.

“Someone who wants this conversation to end.””

The lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

I heard footsteps.

A struggle.

A gunshot.

Then someone grabbed my arm.

I screamed.

“Clara!””

Ricardo’s voice.

A second later, emergency lights flickered on.

A man stood behind me.

Holding a knife against my throat.

I froze.

I knew him.

That was the worst part.

I knew his face.

“Mr. Harris?””

My old restaurant manager smiled sadly.

“Hello, Clara.””

My heart dropped.

“No.””

Ricardo’s eyes turned deadly.

“You.””

Mr. Harris laughed softly.

“I knew she would lead you here eventually.””

Margaret looked at him.

“Evelyn was right about you.””

Mr. Harris smiled.

“Evelyn was wrong about a lot of things.””

Ricardo stepped forward.

“Put the knife down.””

“You’re still giving orders.””

His eyes moved to me.

“Just like your father did.””

I felt the blade press slightly.

“Who are you?””

Mr. Harris looked at me.

“I was there the night your father disappeared.””

My breathing stopped.

“You knew my father?””

“I helped him.””

“Then why did you lie to me?””

His expression hardened.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””

Ricardo’s voice became dangerous.

“Explain.””

Mr. Harris looked at the necklace.

“Anthony Vance didn’t hide the evidence.””

He smiled.

“He hid the person who could expose everything.””

My voice trembled.

“Who?””

Mr. Harris looked directly at me.

“You.””

Then the mansion doors exploded open.

A voice echoed through the hallway.

“Drop the weapon.””

Everyone turned.

A man stood surrounded by guards.

Older.

Scarred.

But alive.

Ricardo stared.

Because he knew him.

I didn’t.

Then Margaret whispered:

“Anthony.””

The man looked at me.

And tears filled his eyes.

“Clara.””

May you like

My knees almost gave out.

My father had been alive all along.
