Chapter 12: The Mother Who Chose the Lie
I couldn’t move.
My entire body refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
My mother.
Alive.
Standing in front of me.
After twenty years of believing she was gone.
After years of grieving a woman who was apparently hiding somewhere in the world.
“Mom?””
The word left my mouth before I could stop it.
Evelyn’s expression changed.
For a second, she looked like the mother I remembered.
The woman who held my hand.
The woman who sang when storms scared me.
Then the expression disappeared.
And I remembered.
The lies.
The secrets.
The silence.
“You’re alive.””
My voice sounded empty.
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
Anthony looked furious.
“You let her believe you were dead.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You let her believe you were dead too.””
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Ricardo stepped forward.
“You have a lot to explain.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I know.””
“Isabella?””
Her eyes changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
“She was my daughter too.””
Ricardo’s face hardened.
“You let her die.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I tried to save her.””
“Try harder.””
The anger in his voice filled the room.
But Evelyn didn’t fight back.
Because she knew he was right.
I stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Everyone looked at me.
I stared at my mother.
“I need answers.””
Evelyn nodded.
“You deserve them.””
“Why did you leave?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because staying would have killed you.””
I shook my head.
“That’s what everyone says.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t get to decide my entire life.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
She didn’t defend herself.
She accepted my anger.
“Tell me the truth.””
Evelyn took a slow breath.
“Your father wasn’t the man in that photograph.””
Anthony looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed at the picture.
“The person holding the gun wasn’t threatening me.””
I looked closer.
“What?””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“The gun was pointed at someone else.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
She looked at Ricardo.
Then at me.
“Your grandfather.””
Silence.
Ricardo froze.
“My father?””
Evelyn nodded.
“The man everyone believed was killed in an accident.””
Anthony stared.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because the person who killed him was still alive.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“Who?””
Evelyn looked toward the doorway.
And whispered:
“The same person who killed Isabella.””
Nobody moved.
“Name them.””
Evelyn looked at me.
And tears filled her eyes.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because you know them.””
The room went silent.
My heart pounded.
“No.””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked at Ricardo.
Then Anthony.
Then me.
“The person who destroyed our families…”
A pause.
“…is someone who has been protecting you since you were a child.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Who?””
Evelyn opened her mouth.
But before she could answer—
A gunshot shattered the window.
Everyone dropped.
Ricardo grabbed me.
Anthony pulled Evelyn down.
Glass covered the floor.
Dante shouted orders.
“Sniper!””
The house erupted into chaos.
We moved away from the windows.
Evelyn grabbed my hand.
“Clara.””
I looked at her.
She was terrified.
Not for herself.
For me.
“I need you to listen.””
“What?””
She reached into her coat.
And pulled out a small envelope.
“I was waiting for the right moment.””
My hands shook as I took it.
“What is this?””
She whispered:
“The final letter Isabella wrote before she died.””
My heart stopped.
“She wrote another one?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because the person she named in that letter…”
She looked toward the shattered window.
“…was the person standing closest to you.””
I stared at the envelope.
And slowly opened it.
May you like
The first line made my blood turn cold.
*Clara, if you are reading this, it means the person I trusted most has betrayed us all.*
