Chapter 13: The Name Written in Isabella’s Letter

My hands were shaking so badly that I almost dropped the letter.

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

Because I knew.

Whatever was written inside would change everything.

Again.

Around me, the house was chaos.

Guards moved through every room.

Dante shouted into his radio.

Ricardo stood beside me, his eyes locked on the envelope.

Anthony watched Evelyn with a mixture of anger and disbelief.

But none of it mattered.

Not anymore.

Because my sister had left me one final message.

I unfolded the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Elegant.

Careful.

The handwriting of a woman who knew every word might be her last.

*Dear Clara,*

My breath caught.

*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you the way I promised I would.*

I covered my mouth.

Ricardo looked away.

Even he couldn’t hide the pain.

I continued.

*I spent my entire life believing I could fix what was broken. I believed if I found the truth, I could stop the people who hurt our family. I was wrong.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

*The person who betrayed us was not a stranger. It was not an enemy hiding in the dark. It was someone who knew our names, our fears, and our weaknesses.*

My fingers tightened.

Then came the sentence I had been waiting for.

*The person who betrayed us is Dante Morelli.*

The room went silent.

I looked up.

Dante.

Everyone looked at him.

His face went pale.

“No.””

Ricardo’s expression became unreadable.

“Explain.””

Dante shook his head.

“I can’t.””

The answer shocked me.

Not because he admitted anything.

Because he sounded broken.

“I can’t explain something I didn’t do.””

Anthony stepped forward.

“Then why did Isabella write your name?””

Dante looked at the letter.

His eyes filled with pain.

“Because she was wrong.””

Ricardo’s voice turned cold.

“My wife was many things.””

A pause.

“But she was never careless.””

Dante lowered his head.

“I know.””

“Then convince me.””

Dante looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not fear of Ricardo.

Fear of losing the last connection he had to Isabella.

“She found something.””

“What?””

Dante swallowed.

“Evidence that someone was using my identity.””

Silence.

Ricardo frowned.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying someone made it look like I betrayed her.””

He looked at me.

“Someone who knew Isabella would trust me enough to investigate.””

Evelyn whispered:

“The perfect scapegoat.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at Dante.

“Isabella suspected that.””

Ricardo stared at her.

“You knew?””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“She didn’t write that letter to accuse Dante.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Then why write his name?””

Evelyn looked at the paper.

I looked down.

The next paragraph was hidden beneath a fold.

I opened it.

*Clara, if Dante’s name is the first thing you see, don’t stop reading. The person I feared knew exactly how to make us destroy each other.*

My heart stopped.

*Dante is not the betrayal. Dante is the key.*

I looked at him.

He closed his eyes.

“She knew.””

Ricardo looked at him.

“Knew what?””

Dante reached into his jacket.

Slowly.

Everyone raised their weapons.

But he pulled out a small object.

A flash drive.

“I’ve had this for six months.””

Ricardo stared.

“Why?””

“Because Isabella gave it to me.””

The room froze.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I should never open it.””

“Why?””

Dante looked at me.

“Because it was meant for you.””

An hour later, we gathered around the old computer in the house.

The flash drive contained one video.

One file.

Created two days before Isabella died.

The screen flickered.

Then Isabella appeared.

My sister.

Alive.

Smiling.

My knees almost gave out.

“Clara.””

Her voice.

After all these years.

Her voice.

“I don’t know when you’ll see this.””

She looked nervous.

But determined.

“I hope I’m wrong.””

The room was completely silent.

“If you’re watching this, it means someone I trusted betrayed me.””

She paused.

“But not Dante.””

Dante closed his eyes.

Isabella continued.

“The person behind everything is someone who has spent years convincing us they are protecting us.””

My heart started racing.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Clara, I’m sorry.””

A pause.

“Because the person who knows the most about what happened…”

She took a breath.

“…is our mother.””

Everyone turned toward Evelyn.

Evelyn looked down.

The video continued.

“Mom knows the truth about our father. She knows the truth about the Belluccis. And she knows why Clara survived.””

I looked at my mother.

“What does that mean?””

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Anthony whispered:

“She knew.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Ricardo stepped toward her.

“What did you hide?””

My mother looked at me.

May you like

And tears filled her eyes.

“The reason everyone wanted you dead.””
