Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Door
The front door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Not Ricardo.
Not Dante.
Not the armed guards surrounding the mansion.
Not me.
The only sound was the rain hitting the windows.
Then a woman stepped inside.
She was older, probably in her late sixties, wearing a dark coat that looked expensive but worn from years of carrying secrets.
Her silver hair was pulled back neatly.
Her eyes were the first thing I noticed.
Because they looked familiar.
Too familiar.
She looked at me like she had been waiting her entire life for this moment.
“Clara Vance.””
My body went cold.
Nobody had introduced me.
Nobody had told her my name.
Ricardo stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman smiled faintly.
“Still protecting everyone except yourself, Ricardo.””
His face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“You know me.””
“I knew Isabella better.””
The mention of my sister’s name made my heart pound.
Dante lifted his weapon.
“Boss, say the word.””
The woman didn’t even look at him.
“You won’t shoot me.””
Dante’s jaw tightened.
“And why is that?””
“Because if I die, the truth dies with me.””
Ricardo stared at her.
“Name.””
She slowly removed her gloves.
“Margaret Bell.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Ricardo reacted.
A small movement.
A flicker in his eyes.
“You were Isabella’s caretaker.””
The woman smiled.
“Not caretaker.””
She looked at me.
“Mother.””
The room exploded into chaos.
“What?””
I stepped back.
“No.””
Margaret looked at me sadly.
“You deserve answers.””
I shook my head.
“My mother was Evelyn Vance.””
“Yes.””
“Then who are you?””
Her expression broke.
“Someone who failed both of you.””
Ricardo moved closer.
“Explain.””
Margaret reached into her bag and pulled out an old envelope.
“I was there the night Isabella disappeared.””
My breath caught.
“You mean the night she died?””
Margaret looked down.
“No.””
The silence was unbearable.
“What?””
She looked directly at me.
“Isabella Moretti was never supposed to die.””
Ricardo froze.
“What did you say?””
“She was supposed to vanish.””
Dante lowered his gun slightly.
“Boss…”
Ricardo ignored him.
“Where is my wife?””
Margaret’s eyes filled with sadness.
“She’s gone.””
A strange mixture of anger and pain crossed Ricardo’s face.
“Then don’t play games.””
“I’m not.””
She placed the envelope on the table.
“The woman who ordered Isabella’s death wanted everyone to believe Isabella was dead.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Why?””
Margaret looked at me.
“Because Isabella discovered the truth about your birth.””
My fingers tightened.
“My birth?””
She nodded.
“You and Isabella weren’t just sisters.””
Ricardo frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret opened the envelope.
Inside was a document.
A birth record.
Two names.
Two dates.
One mother.
I stepped closer.
My eyes scanned the paper.
Then my heart stopped.
The names were not Clara Vance and Isabella Vance.
They were different.
“Evelyn changed our names,” I whispered.
Margaret nodded.
“She was hiding you.””
“From who?””
Margaret looked toward the mansion windows.
“From the Bellucci family.””
Ricardo’s face darkened.
“The Belluccis?””
Dante immediately understood.
“They were supposed to be wiped out years ago.””
Margaret looked at him.
“You don’t erase monsters.””
She looked back at me.
“You only make them angry.””
I felt dizzy.
“What does Isabella have to do with them?””
Margaret’s voice lowered.
“Your sister found out that the Belluccis were connected to your father’s death.””
I froze.
“My father died in an accident.””
Margaret looked away.
“That’s what you were told.””
Ricardo stared at her.
“Who was Clara’s father?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then she said:
“Anthony Vance.””
The room went silent.
Ricardo’s expression changed.
Because he knew that name.
“You’re lying.””
“No.””
“Anthony Vance was a witness.””
“To what?””
Ricardo looked at me.
“To the night my father was killed.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Ricardo’s voice became quiet.
“Your father was the only man who knew who betrayed my family.””
I looked between them.
“You’re telling me my family was connected to yours?””
Margaret nodded.
“Before Isabella married Ricardo, before you became Clara Vance, before anyone knew your name…”
She touched the photograph on the table.
“You were already part of this world.””
I backed away.
“No.””
Margaret stepped closer.
“Clara—”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“I spent my entire life trying to escape a past I didn’t even know existed.””
Ricardo looked at me.
And for once, he didn’t have an answer.
Then Dante’s phone rang.
He answered immediately.
His face changed.
“Boss.””
Ricardo looked at him.
“What?””
Dante swallowed.
“We found the person who sent the message.””
A pause.
“Where?””
Dante looked at me.
His voice dropped.
“She’s at the cemetery.””
My heart stopped.
“Whose cemetery?””
Dante hesitated.
May you like
Then:
“Isabella Moretti’s.””
