Chapter 3: The Woman Who Was Never Supposed to Return

The words followed me everywhere.

Her sister died because of her.

I heard them in the elevator.

In the silence of Ricardo’s mansion.

Even when I closed my eyes, I saw the message written across Dante’s phone screen.

For twenty-eight years, I had believed I was an only child.

Now I was being told my sister had been alive.

My sister had been Isabella Moretti.

And someone had killed her because of a secret connected to me.

I sat alone in the guest room that night, staring at the necklace around my neck.

The little silver heart suddenly felt heavier.

A knock came at the door.

“Clara?””

I looked up.

Ricardo stood there.

Not as a boss.

Not as a man everyone feared.

Just Ricardo.

“Can I come in?””

I nodded.

He walked inside slowly.

“You should sleep.””

I almost laughed.

“Sleep?””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“I spent my whole life thinking my mother abandoned me emotionally because she was cold.””

I held the necklace.

“Now I find out she was hiding an entire person from me.””

Ricardo sat across from me.

“Evelyn was protecting you.””

“Or controlling me.””

He didn’t argue.

That surprised me.

“My wife used to say secrets don’t disappear.””

He looked toward the window.

“They wait.””

I stared at him.

“Did Isabella know about me?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Three months before she died.””

I stood.

“What?””

Ricardo looked at me.

“She found your name in old records.””

“Then why didn’t she come to me?””

His face changed.

“Because someone stopped her.””

The room became colder.

“Who?””

Ricardo didn’t answer.

That scared me more.

The next morning, I met Leo in the garden.

He was sitting beside a small fountain, holding a toy dinosaur.

When he saw me, his face brightened.

“Clara!””

He ran toward me.

I caught him.

“You remembered my name.””

He nodded.

“Daddy said you’re family.””

I looked toward the house.

Ricardo stood by the window watching us.

I smiled sadly.

“Your daddy says a lot of things.””

Leo hugged my arm.

“Are you my mommy’s sister?””

I froze.

“Who told you that?””

He shrugged.

“Mommy.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she say?””

Leo touched his necklace.

“She said…”

He thought carefully.

“She said if something bad happened, I should find the girl with the heart.””

I looked down at my necklace.

“Leo, when did she tell you that?””

“Before she went away.””

My blood ran cold.

Before she died.

Isabella knew.

She knew something would happen.

A voice behind me said:

“She prepared him.””

I turned.

Ricardo stood there.

His expression was unreadable.

“Prepared him for what?””

Before he could answer, alarms suddenly exploded through the mansion.

Men shouted outside.

Dante rushed through the door.

“Boss!””

Ricardo immediately moved in front of Leo and me.

“What happened?””

Dante held a tablet.

“Someone breached the security system.””

“How?””

Dante hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

Ricardo’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.””

Dante looked at me.

“They used Isabella’s old access code.””

The world seemed to stop.

Ricardo’s face went pale.

“That code was destroyed after her death.””

Dante nodded.

“I know.””

A heavy silence filled the room.

Then a woman’s voice came through the mansion speakers.

Soft.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Ricardo.””

Everyone froze.

Ricardo looked toward the ceiling.

His face changed completely.

“No…”

The voice continued.

“You took my daughter.””

I felt every hair on my arms rise.

Dante reached for his weapon.

Ricardo whispered one word.

“Isabella?””

The voice laughed softly.

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the woman who raised the sister you thought was dead.””

The speaker clicked.

And the front door of the mansion slowly unlocked.

Someone was standing outside.

Holding a photograph of my childhood.

And underneath it was a message written in red ink:

*CLARA VANCE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE.*
