Chapter 14: The Truth That Could Destroy Them All

The silence after Evelyn’s confession was worse than any scream.

Because everyone finally understood.

The mystery wasn’t who knew the truth.

The mystery was why the truth had been buried.

I stared at my mother.

“You knew why they wanted me gone.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

My voice broke.

“You keep saying that.””

I stepped closer.

“But you never ask what it did to me.””

Evelyn looked away.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My hands trembled.

“You took my family away before anyone else could.””

That hurt her.

I saw it.

But she deserved to hear it.

Anthony moved closer.

“Evelyn.””

She looked at him.

“I made a mistake.””

“A twenty-eight-year mistake.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Then she reached into her pocket.

She pulled out an old photograph.

Another one.

She placed it on the table.

This time, nobody was ready.

Because the photograph showed Isabella.

Me.

And another child.

A little boy.

Ricardo picked it up.

His face changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the child.

“That’s impossible.””

“Who is it?””

Ricardo’s hand shook.

“My brother.””

The room went silent.

“You had another brother?””

Ricardo nodded slowly.

“Matteo.””

Anthony looked confused.

“I thought he died.””

“So did I.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“He didn’t.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

Then Dante quietly said:

“Boss…”

Ricardo looked at him.

“What?””

Dante stared at the photograph.

“Matteo Moretti was the original owner of the security code.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“No.””

Ricardo shook his head.

“My brother died.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“He didn’t.””

The truth finally arrived.

Not like a revelation.

Like a weapon.

“Matteo survived,” she continued.

“And he spent years building something.””

Anthony whispered:

“Revenge.””

Evelyn nodded.

“He blamed the Morettis.””

Ricardo’s face hardened.

“For what?””

She looked at him.

“For your father’s death.””

Silence.

“You’re saying my brother killed our father?””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“I’m saying your brother believed someone in your family did.””

My head spun.

Everyone was connected.

Every family.

Every tragedy.

Every lie.

“So Matteo is the one behind this?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Ricardo looked devastated.

“My own brother.””

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

But his expression told us everything.

“Where?””

A pause.

“Keep him alive.””

He hung up.

Dante stepped forward.

“What happened?””

Ricardo looked at me.

His voice was barely audible.

“Matteo has Leo.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“He took him from the mansion.””

I moved immediately.

Ricardo grabbed my arm.

“Clara.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“He lost his mother.””

My voice broke.

“I know what that feels like.””

Ricardo released me.

For the first time, nobody tried to stop me.

Because everyone understood.

Leo was not just a child.

He was Isabella’s last piece of her heart.

We found Matteo in an abandoned church outside Brooklyn.

The place looked forgotten.

Broken windows.

Dust-covered seats.

A place where ghosts belonged.

Ricardo walked in first.

“Matteo.””

A laugh echoed.

Then a man stepped from the shadows.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Leo was sitting beside him.

Safe.

Unharmed.

“Hello, brother.””

Ricardo stared.

“I watched you die.””

Matteo smiled.

“I know.””

“Why?””

The smile disappeared.

“Because everyone I loved died while you built an empire.””

Ricardo’s face hardened.

“You think I killed our father?””

Matteo looked at him.

“I know.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“Your father had proof.””

Anthony stepped forward.

“Proof of what?””

Matteo smiled.

“The Moretti family didn’t kill my father.””

Everyone froze.

“Then who?””

Matteo looked at Ricardo.

“Your mother.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

Matteo looked at me.

“And she’s been hiding the reason ever since.””

Behind us, Evelyn whispered:

“No.””

Matteo smiled.

“Tell them.””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn looked terrified.

For the first time.

Really terrified.

May you like

Matteo stepped closer.

“Tell them why Clara was born.””
