Chapter 9: The Sister Who Knew Where My Daughter Was

I stared at the phone.

My sister’s name glowed on the screen.

Rebecca.

The person who had held me while I cried after my baby was declared dead.

The person who told me I needed to move on.

The person who had been beside me through every anniversary, every birthday, every painful reminder.

My hand shook.

Daniel noticed.

“Answer it.””

I couldn’t.

Because suddenly I was afraid.

Not of what she would say.

But of what I already knew.

After twenty years of secrets, the worst betrayals were always the ones closest to home.

I answered.

“Rebecca?””

There was silence.

Then a quiet breath.

“Emily.””

Her voice sounded different.

Older.

Broken.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

Another pause.

“You found her.””

My blood ran cold.

Not a question.

A statement.

“You knew.””

She didn’t deny it.

“I always knew you would find out eventually.””

Everyone around me heard.

Daniel’s face changed.

Clara covered her mouth.

I walked away from the group.

“You knew my daughter was alive?””

Rebecca’s voice trembled.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed me.

I gripped the phone tighter.

“How long?””

“Twenty years.””

I closed my eyes.

The hospital lights blurred.

“Why?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I almost screamed.

“Everyone says that.””

I looked around at the people who had destroyed my life while claiming they were saving me.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.””

Rebecca whispered:

“I was.””

“Then tell me where she is.””

Silence.

Long silence.

Then:

“She’s with me.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

“She has been with me for years.””

My knees nearly gave out.

Daniel rushed forward.

“Emily?””

I looked at him.

“She has her.””

The room exploded into confusion.

Clara stared at me.

“Who?””

I couldn’t speak.

Rebecca answered through the phone.

“Your daughter.””

A sob escaped my throat.

The daughter I had lost.

The daughter I had mourned.

The daughter I thought existed only in memories.

Alive.

With my sister.

“Put her on the phone.””

Rebecca went quiet.

“Emily…”

“Put her on the phone.””

Another pause.

Then I heard breathing.

A young woman’s voice.

“Hello?””

My heart shattered.

I didn’t know her.

But somehow I did.

“Who is this?””

The girl hesitated.

“Rebecca said I should call you Mom.””

Everything inside me broke.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

“Say that again.””

“Mom.””

I cried.

Not softly.

Not gracefully.

Twenty years of pain came out in one moment.

Daniel wrapped his arm around me.

Clara stood nearby, crying too.

Because she understood.

She knew what it meant to search for a family that had been taken away.

“What’s your name?”” I whispered.

The girl answered.

“Lily.””

Lily.

My daughter had a name.

A life.

A story I had never known.

“I want to see you.””

“I know.””

“Where are you?””

Rebecca interrupted.

“Emily, before you come, there’s something you need to know.””

My happiness disappeared.

“What?””

Her voice became serious.

“Lily doesn’t know the truth.””

I frowned.

“What truth?””

“That you’re her mother.””

The room went silent.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Why?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Because I was told if I ever revealed it, Lily would be taken away.””

“By who?””

I already knew the answer.

But I needed to hear it.

Rebecca’s voice broke.

“By Daniel’s father.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

Rebecca continued.

“Richard Williams knew Lily existed.””

Daniel froze.

“And he made sure Emily never found her.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone pale.

Because this was no longer just about the past.

The man who created this nightmare was gone.

But his secrets were still alive.

“Rebecca,” I whispered.

“Yes?””

“Why did you really keep Lily?””

She started crying.

And then she said something that changed everything.

“Because Emily…”

A pause.

“I’m the one who took her from the hospital.””

Nobody moved.

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

“What?””

Rebecca sobbed.

“I’m sorry.””

My entire body went cold.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her answer came quietly.

“Because the baby you think was stolen…”

May you like

Another pause.

“Was the baby I was supposed to lose.””
