Chapter 12: The Truth Lily Was Forced To Carry

We drove to Rebecca’s house before sunrise.

Nobody spoke during the entire trip.

The silence was worse than an argument.

Because everyone was afraid of what the next truth would be.

Clara sat in the back seat.

She stared out the window.

I wanted to reach for her.

To tell her she was my daughter.

To tell her nothing could change that.

But after everything we had learned, I understood something.

Words were not enough anymore.

Trust had to be rebuilt.

When we arrived, Rebecca was waiting outside.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had spent the entire night preparing to lose me.

The moment she saw me, tears filled her eyes.

“Emily.””

I stepped out of the car.

“Take me to Lily.””

Rebecca looked down.

“She’s inside.””

I walked past her.

Then stopped.

“After.””

She knew what I meant.

After I saw my daughter.

After I understood everything.

Then we would talk.

The living room was filled with photographs.

A child growing up.

Birthdays.

Graduations.

A normal life.

A life I missed.

Then I saw her.

A young woman sitting near the window.

She looked up.

And everything inside me stopped.

Because I saw myself.

Not exactly.

But enough.

The same eyes.

The same expression when she was nervous.

“Mom?””

One word.

That was all it took.

I walked toward her.

And she stood.

Neither of us moved.

Then Lily whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“I should have found you.””

“No.””

She started crying.

“I always wondered why I felt like something was missing.””

I held her.

For the first time.

My daughter.

My baby.

The child I thought I had lost.

But even in that moment of happiness, there was pain.

Because Clara stood behind me.

Watching.

Feeling like she had lost something too.

I turned.

“Clara.””

She looked away.

“I’m happy for you.””

The sadness in her voice broke me.

I crossed the room and took her hand.

“You are my daughter too.””

Her eyes filled.

“But she is your real daughter.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You both are.””

For the first time, Clara cried.

Not from fear.

Not from confusion.

From finally being seen.

Later, after everyone sat down, Rebecca told us everything.

“I didn’t plan to take Lily.””

Nobody interrupted.

“I was grieving. Margaret found me at the hospital.””

She looked at me.

“She told me your baby had died.””

My heart tightened.

“She lied.””

“Yes.””

Rebecca looked down.

“But I believed her.””

“And then?””

“She brought Lily to me.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“Why would she trust you?””

Rebecca answered:

“Because Richard wanted Lily hidden.””

“Why?””

Rebecca looked at Clara.

“Because Clara was the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Rebecca hesitated.

Then pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this for twenty years.””

Inside was a DNA report.

I stared.

“What is this?””

Rebecca whispered:

“The reason Richard wanted Clara gone.””

Daniel took the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he froze.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

The results showed Clara’s parentage.

I read the names.

And my hands began shaking.

Because the father listed on the report was not Richard.

Not anyone in the Williams family.

It was someone else.

Someone still alive.

Someone who had been searching for the truth.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Who is this?””

She whispered:

“The man who has been sending you warnings.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“The man from the hospital?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

“But why?””

Her answer was quiet.

“Because he wants Clara back.””

The room went silent.

Lily looked confused.

“Who is he?””

I stared at the name on the paper.

A name that connected every lie.

Every secret.

Every missing piece.

Then the front door suddenly opened.

A man stood there.

Older.

Tired.

Holding a photograph in his hand.

He looked at Clara.

May you like

And whispered:

“My daughter.””
