Chapter 4: The Child Hidden Behind Another Lie

The attorney’s words stayed in the room long after the call ended.

Clara was never the only child she was hiding.

I wanted to believe I had misunderstood.

I wanted to believe there was another explanation.

But after twenty years of being lied to, I had learned something painful.

The truth rarely arrives gently.

It comes through a locked door.

A broken promise.

A voice on the phone telling you that your entire life was built on something false.

Daniel slowly lowered his phone.

“My father knew?””

Mr. Harris looked down.

“Yes.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“You knew too?””

The old butler’s face tightened.

“I knew pieces.””

“Pieces?”” Daniel repeated.

His voice cracked with anger.

“You watched my mother destroy my wife’s life and you only knew pieces?””

Mr. Harris didn’t defend himself.

“I was afraid.””

That answer surprised all of us.

Because Mr. Harris had been the strongest person in that house for as long as I could remember.

He had stayed through deaths, arguments, and family scandals.

But now his hands were trembling.

“Afraid of what?”” I asked.

He looked at Clara.

“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””

Clara hugged herself.

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did I.

I looked at the documents spread across the table.

The hospital bracelet.

The transfer papers.

The letter from Rose.

All the pieces were there.

But the picture was still incomplete.

“Call him back,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“Who?””

“The attorney.””

He immediately dialed.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then voicemail.

My stomach sank.

“He’s not answering.””

“Try again,” I said.

Daniel did.

Nothing.

A strange silence filled the basement.

Then Clara noticed something.

“Wait.””

She pointed at the documents.

“What is that?””

I followed her finger.

A small corner of an old envelope was sticking out beneath the hospital records.

Mr. Harris carefully pulled it free.

The paper was yellowed with age.

There was no name.

Only one word written across the front.

SECRET.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Apparently everyone in this family had secrets.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My fingers went numb.

It showed Margaret.

Twenty years younger.

Standing outside the hospital.

Holding a baby.

But the baby was not Clara.

It was another child.

A little boy.

Behind the photograph was a note.

I read it aloud.

“Margaret, if anything happens to me, the children must be returned to their mother.””

Children.

Plural.

Returned to their mother.

My heart pounded.

“Who wrote this?””

Mr. Harris took the photograph.

His face changed.

“Rose.””

Clara looked at him.

“My foster mother?””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Daniel stared at the picture.

“Mom had another child?””

Nobody answered.

Because none of us knew.

Then footsteps echoed above us.

Someone was walking through the house.

We all froze.

It was nearly midnight.

Everyone who lived there was downstairs.

Except one person.

Margaret.

Daniel grabbed the documents.

“Mom.””

We rushed upstairs.

The hallway lights flickered.

The front door was open.

Cold air rushed inside.

And Margaret stood near the entrance.

She wasn’t alone.

A young man stood beside her.

He looked around twenty years old.

The same age Clara should have been.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized something.

Not his face.

His eyes.

They were the same eyes as Daniel’s.

Daniel stopped walking.

“Who is that?””

Margaret looked at him.

For once, she didn’t pretend.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

“This is your brother.””

The words hit harder than any scream.

Daniel stepped backward.

“My what?””

The young man looked uncomfortable.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

His voice rose.

“After another twenty years?””

The young man looked at Clara.

Then at me.

And whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“I know her.””

Everyone turned.

Clara looked confused.

“You know me?””

The young man nodded.

“I’ve seen you before.””

“Where?””

He looked at Margaret.

She looked terrified.

Then he answered.

“At the foster home.””

The room went silent.

Clara’s face went pale.

“You were there?””

He nodded.

“I was the reason you were moved.””

I felt my entire body go cold.

“What are you saying?””

The young man swallowed.

“My name is Ethan.””

He looked at Clara.

“And twenty years ago, my grandmother told me to stay quiet.””

Margaret whispered:

“Ethan, stop.””

But it was too late.

The truth had already started coming out.

Ethan looked directly at me.

“Your daughter wasn’t taken because of a mistake.””

My heart stopped.

“She was taken because my grandmother needed to hide what she had done.””

I stepped forward.

“Then tell me.””

My voice broke.

“Tell me everything.””

Ethan looked toward Margaret.

And quietly said:

“She didn’t steal Clara.””

May you like

A pause.

“She stole both of us.””
