Chapter 7: The Doctor Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The hospital room smelled exactly like the place where my life had fallen apart twenty years earlier.

Antiseptic.

Cold air.

Fear.

I stood outside Room 417 with my hand on the door handle, unable to move.

For two decades, hospitals had been the place where I remembered losing everything.

Now, somehow, it was the place where I might finally get the truth back.

Daniel stood beside me.

Clara was on my other side.

Neither of us spoke.

Because we all knew the same thing.

Once that door opened, our lives would never be the same.

Mr. Harris had insisted on coming with us.

Margaret had refused.

She stayed at home.

Or at least that was what she told us.

I no longer trusted anything about her.

Daniel looked at me.

“Are you ready?””

I almost laughed.

Ready?

How could anyone be ready to meet the man who convinced them their child was dead?

I pushed the door open.

An elderly man lay in the hospital bed.

His hair was completely white.

His body looked fragile.

But his eyes were sharp.

The moment he saw me, his expression changed.

“Emily.””

My heart stopped.

He knew my name.

Clara stepped closer.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at her.

And tears filled his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

That was the first thing he said.

Not hello.

Not an explanation.

An apology.

I walked closer.

“You don’t get to say sorry yet.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“You told me my baby died.””

His face tightened.

“I know.””

“You signed papers.””

“I know.””

“You watched me destroy myself.””

His eyes closed.

“I know.””

The anger inside me burned.

But beneath it was something else.

A desperate need for answers.

“Then tell me why.””

Dr. Samuel Carter looked at Clara.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Because I was trying to stop something worse.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re going to have to explain.””

The doctor nodded weakly.

“My daughter Rose was the only person who knew what happened that night.””

Clara froze.

“My foster mother.””

“Yes.””

“She knew you?””

“She saved you.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Clara.

“What does he mean?””

Dr. Carter swallowed.

“Twenty years ago, Margaret Williams came to the hospital.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“What did she want?””

The doctor stared at the ceiling.

“She wanted a child hidden.””

My stomach turned.

“Why?””

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Because your daughter was proof of a betrayal.””

Daniel frowned.

“What betrayal?””

The doctor looked at him.

“Your father’s.””

The silence was unbearable.

“Explain,” Daniel demanded.

Dr. Carter took a deep breath.

“Your father, Richard Williams, had an affair with my daughter Rose.””

Clara stepped back.

“No.””

The doctor looked at her sadly.

“Yes.””

My mind struggled to understand.

Rose.

Richard.

Clara.

The family secret had roots deeper than I ever imagined.

“Clara was their child?”” I asked.

Dr. Carter nodded.

“She was.””

Everyone looked at Clara.

She stood completely still.

Like her body was there, but her mind had left.

“My entire life…”

Her voice broke.

“My entire life was built on a lie?””

I reached for her.

But she stepped away.

“I don’t know who I am.””

Those words hurt more than anything.

Because I knew that feeling.

For twenty years, I had wondered who I was without my daughter.

Now she was wondering who she was without the life she knew.

Daniel stared at Dr. Carter.

“Then why was Emily told Clara was her daughter?””

The doctor looked at me.

“Because Margaret made a decision.””

“What decision?””

He closed his eyes.

“She switched the babies.””

The room went completely silent.

Even the machines seemed quieter.

“What?”” I whispered.

Dr. Carter looked at me.

“Your daughter was not the child you were told she was.””

My knees nearly gave out.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Dr. Carter’s voice softened.

“Emily, the hospital records were changed.””

Daniel grabbed the edge of the bed.

“Then whose baby did she take?””

The doctor looked at Clara.

And said:

“The child you thought was yours belonged to Rose.””

Clara’s face went pale.

“And me?””

Dr. Carter looked at her.

“You were the baby Emily gave birth to.””

The room spun.

I stared at Clara.

My daughter.

My real daughter.

The girl who had stood in my dining room wearing the necklace I had made.

The girl I almost lost again.

“But why?”” I whispered.

“Why would Margaret do this?””

Dr. Carter looked toward the window.

“Because Richard was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That the truth about Clara’s birth would destroy the Williams family.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“What truth?””

The doctor looked directly at him.

“Richard was not Clara’s father.””

Daniel went still.

“Then who was?””

Dr. Carter hesitated.

And before he could answer, the hospital room door suddenly opened.

A nurse rushed inside.

“Doctor, you need to come with me.””

Everyone turned.

The nurse looked at Dr. Carter.

“There’s someone downstairs asking for you.””

“Who?””

The nurse looked nervous.

“She said her name is Margaret Williams.””

My blood turned cold.

Because Margaret wasn’t there to apologize.

May you like

She was there because she knew the truth was finally coming out.

And she was ready to bury it one more time.
