Chapter 14: The Last Lie Margaret Told
Margaret walked into Rebecca’s house like she still owned every room she entered.
But this time, nobody moved aside for her.
Nobody lowered their voices.
Nobody protected her.
Because the truth was finally stronger than her fear.
She looked at Michael.
And her face changed.
“You.””
Michael stared at her.
“Yes.””
Margaret’s expression collapsed.
“You’re alive.””
The words shocked everyone.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew he was alive?””
Margaret said nothing.
That was answer enough.
I felt something inside me break.
Another secret.
Another person who knew.
“How many times?”” I whispered.
Margaret looked at me.
“How many times did you stand beside me knowing the truth?””
Her eyes filled.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice was calm now.
Almost frighteningly calm.
“You don’t get to explain yourself anymore.””
She looked around the room.
At Clara.
At Lily.
At Daniel.
At Michael.
“You all think I’m the villain.””
Michael’s voice was cold.
“You stole a child.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“I saved one.””
Clara stepped forward.
“You keep saying that.””
Her voice trembled.
“But nobody asked what I wanted.””
Margaret looked at her.
And for the first time, she looked truly ashamed.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Clara shook her head.
“You don’t know what it feels like to grow up believing you were abandoned.””
Margaret whispered:
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Because they were true.
Margaret looked down.
“Yes.””
Everyone went silent.
She finally admitted it.
“I was afraid.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at him.
“Of losing everything.””
“You destroyed everything.””
“I know.””
Margaret sat down.
“I made one terrible choice.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“One?””
She looked at him.
“I should have told the truth.””
“Yes.””
“I should have returned Clara.””
“Yes.””
“I should have stopped Richard.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Margaret looked at him.
“Your father threatened me too.””
That surprised everyone.
“He threatened you?””
She nodded.
“Richard knew I wanted to expose him.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because he showed me something.””
“What?””
She looked at Clara.
“He showed me Lily.””
I froze.
“What?””
Margaret continued.
“He told me if I went to the police, Rebecca and Lily would disappear.””
Rebecca covered her mouth.
“So you knew.””
“Yes.””
The room became painfully silent.
Margaret looked at me.
“I thought I was choosing the lesser evil.””
I shook my head.
“You chose yourself.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
Michael stepped forward.
“Where is Rose?””
Margaret looked at him.
And tears appeared.
“She’s gone.””
Clara froze.
“What do you mean?””
“I mean Richard found her.””
Michael’s face changed.
“No.””
Margaret whispered:
“She gave me one thing before she disappeared.””
“What?””
Margaret reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small silver key.
I recognized it immediately.
Another key.
Another locked secret.
“She told me to give this to Emily when the truth came out.””
My hands shook as I took it.
“What does it open?””
Margaret looked at me.
“The place where Rose kept the final proof.””
Daniel stared.
“Where?””
Margaret answered:
“The old Williams family chapel.””
Nobody spoke.
Because we all knew.
The chapel had been abandoned for twenty years.
The place where our family buried its secrets.
Michael looked at Clara.
“Your mother wanted you to have something.””
Clara whispered:
“What?””
Margaret’s voice broke.
“A letter.””
“To me?””
“Yes.””
She looked at the key.
“But only you can open it.””
Clara took the key.
Her hands trembled.
For the first time, Margaret reached toward her.
Then stopped.
She didn’t deserve forgiveness.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
But she deserved to finally admit what she had done.
The next morning, we stood outside the old chapel.
The door had not been opened in twenty years.
Clara inserted the key.
The lock turned.
Inside was darkness.
Dust.
Silence.
Then Clara found a small wooden box on the altar.
Her name was carved into it.
She opened it.
Inside was a letter.
And one photograph.
The photograph showed Rose holding Clara as a baby.
Beside her was another person.
Someone none of us expected.
Someone who made Clara drop the letter.
Because written beneath the photograph were the words:
May you like
YOUR MOTHER DID NOT DIE.
SHE WAS TAKEN.
