Chapter 10: The Daughter I Lost and the Sister Who Took Her

I couldn’t hear anything after Rebecca said those words.

The hospital lobby disappeared.

The people around me disappeared.

Even the sound of my own breathing felt far away.

The only thing I could hear was her voice repeating in my mind.

The baby you think was stolen…

Was the baby I was supposed to lose.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Rebecca.””

My voice barely sounded like mine.

“Explain.””

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“I was pregnant too.””

Daniel looked at me.

Everyone did.

I turned away from them.

“Twenty years ago?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Rebecca started crying.

“I lost my baby three days before you gave birth.””

My heart sank.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“It doesn’t.””

I walked toward the hospital window.

Outside, cars moved through the darkness like nothing had happened.

Like my entire world hadn’t just shifted again.

“What happened that night?””

Rebecca took a shaky breath.

“I went to the hospital because I couldn’t handle losing my baby alone.””

I closed my eyes.

I remembered that night.

The hospital hallway.

The bright lights.

The nurses whispering.

The feeling that something was wrong.

“I saw you holding Lily.””

I froze.

“Lily?””

Rebecca continued.

“Your daughter.””

The name felt strange and beautiful at the same time.

“I saw you holding her before everything changed.””

My throat tightened.

“Before what changed?””

Rebecca went silent.

Then:

“Before Margaret came to me.””

I turned around.

Everyone was watching.

“Margaret?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face darkened.

“What did my mother do?””

Rebecca answered.

“She offered me a way to have the child I lost.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt sick.

“No.””

Rebecca sobbed.

“I was broken, Emily.””

“You took my baby.””

“I know.””

“You watched me bury her.””

“I know.””

“You let me think she was dead.””

“I know.””

Each word hurt.

Not because it was new.

Because it was true.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Rebecca, why are you telling her now?””

My sister was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because Lily found the documents.””

My heart stopped.

“What documents?””

“The ones Richard hid.””

The same name again.

Richard Williams.

The man who had poisoned everything.

“What did Lily find?””

Rebecca’s voice lowered.

“She found her birth records.””

I looked at Clara.

Then at Daniel.

The entire family was connected by a web of lies.

“Where is Lily?””

Rebecca gave me an address.

“I’ll send it.””

“Why didn’t you come forward before?””

A painful silence.

Then she answered:

“Because Lily was sick.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She had surgery when she was young. Then more complications.””

My anger didn’t disappear.

But it changed.

“She was my daughter.””

“I know.””

“I would have been there.””

“I know.””

Rebecca whispered:

“That’s what made me feel worse.””

The call ended shortly after.

I stood there holding the phone.

Unable to move.

Daniel approached slowly.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For all of it.””

His voice broke.

“I thought I knew my family.””

I looked at Clara.

She was staring at the floor.

“Clara.””

She looked up.

“I’m okay.””

But she wasn’t.

Nobody was.

She had spent her entire life believing she was abandoned.

Now she had a mother.

But she also had to learn she wasn’t the only missing child.

That her identity had been stolen by adults who thought they had the right to rewrite children’s lives.

Mr. Harris quietly spoke.

“There’s something you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out an old key.

“I found this in Richard’s office after he died.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because I didn’t know what it opened.””

He placed it in my hand.

A small metal tag hung from it.

Room 302.

I looked at him.

“Where is that?””

Mr. Harris hesitated.

“The old family storage building.””

My stomach tightened.

“What’s inside?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel picked up his jacket.

“We’re going.””

I looked at Clara.

Then at the key.

Twenty years of secrets had been locked away.

Maybe the final answers were behind that door.

But when we arrived at the old storage building, we found something waiting outside.

A note taped to the entrance.

Emily.

You are looking for the wrong daughter.

May you like

Underneath were four words.

SHE NEVER LEFT.
