Chapter 13: The Man Who Claimed My Daughter
The stranger standing in Rebecca’s doorway looked like a man who had spent twenty years searching for something he was never sure he would find.
His eyes were fixed on Clara.
Not with greed.
Not with anger.
With pain.
The kind of pain only a parent could understand.
“My daughter.””
The words hung in the room.
Nobody moved.
Clara stepped backward.
“No.””
The man’s face broke.
“I know this is impossible to believe.””
“Who are you?””
Her voice was shaking.
He looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
“My name is Michael Carter.””
My heart stopped.
Carter.
The same last name as Rose.
The same last name as Dr. Samuel Carter.
The man who had been hidden from us for twenty years.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Are you related to Rose Carter?””
Michael nodded.
“She was my sister.””
The room went silent.
I looked at the DNA report in my hand.
The name on the paper suddenly made sense.
Michael Carter.
Clara’s biological father.
The man Richard Williams had tried to erase.
“Why now?”” I asked.
Michael looked at me.
“Because I finally found the courage to come back.””
I almost laughed.
Courage?
After twenty years?
But then I saw Clara’s face.
She wasn’t angry.
She was confused.
Lost.
The same way I had felt when I discovered my entire life was built on lies.
“Tell me the truth,” she whispered.
Michael looked at her.
“I will.””
He stepped inside.
Rebecca closed the door.
Nobody trusted him.
But everyone needed answers.
“Twenty years ago,” Michael began, “Rose and I were planning to leave.””
Clara stared.
“You were together?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you raise me?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I never got the chance.””
The room became quiet.
Michael looked at the floor.
“Richard found out about us.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“My father.””
“Yes.””
“He threatened you?””
Michael nodded.
“He threatened everyone.””
“What did he want?””
Michael looked at Clara.
“He wanted her gone.””
Clara’s face changed.
“Why?””
“Because Richard discovered Rose was pregnant.””
A chill ran through me.
“He knew Clara was yours.””
Michael nodded.
“He also knew Rose had evidence against him.””
“What evidence?”” Daniel asked.
Michael reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
“Records.””
Everyone stared.
“Records of the children Richard moved.””
The room became still.
“He wasn’t just hiding affairs,” Michael said.
“He was hiding crimes.””
Daniel looked sick.
“My father…”
“He used money and influence to control people’s lives. When Rose discovered what he was doing, she threatened to expose him.””
Michael looked at Clara.
“She thought keeping you hidden would keep you safe.””
Clara’s voice broke.
“But I grew up without my parents.””
Michael lowered his head.
“I know.””
“You missed everything.””
“I know.””
“You weren’t there when I needed someone.””
“I know.””
The pain in his voice made the room quiet.
Because sometimes regret cannot fix what happened.
It can only prove someone understands the damage.
I stepped toward Clara.
She looked overwhelmed.
“My whole life,” she whispered.
“I thought nobody wanted me.””
My heart broke.
“Oh, Clara.””
She looked at me.
“But everyone was fighting over me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the cruelest truth.
She had never been unwanted.
She had been loved by people who failed to protect her.
Michael looked at Daniel.
“There’s something else.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Your father wasn’t acting alone.””
My stomach tightened.
“We know about Margaret.””
Michael shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Rebecca.
“And we know about your sister.””
Rebecca looked down.
“But there was someone else.””
The room became colder.
“Who?””
Michael reached into his pocket again.
This time, he pulled out an old newspaper clipping.
The headline was faded.
LOCAL DOCTOR DISAPPEARS AFTER HOSPITAL INVESTIGATION.
Below it was a photograph.
A man.
I recognized him.
Dr. Samuel Carter.
“What does this mean?”” I asked.
Michael looked at me.
“Samuel wasn’t hiding because he was guilty.””
My breath caught.
“He was hiding because he was protecting someone.””
“Who?””
Michael looked at Clara.
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“Rose?””
He nodded.
“Rose didn’t disappear.””
My fingers tightened.
“Then where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Michael looked toward the window.
“She spent twenty years waiting for the right moment.””
Clara whispered:
“Waiting for what?””
Michael looked at her.
“For you to come home.””
Before anyone could respond, another sound came from outside.
A car door slammed.
Then footsteps.
Fast.
Angry.
Approaching the house.
Rebecca looked toward the window.
Her face turned pale.
“No.””
Daniel noticed.
“Who is it?””
Rebecca whispered:
“The person who made sure Rose could never come back.””
The front door handle moved.
Someone was trying to enter.
And then a familiar voice called from outside.
“Emily.””
May you like
My blood froze.
Margaret.
