The Locked Pantry / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew The Truth

Vanessa ended the call immediately.

Too quickly.

That was how I knew it mattered.

I stood there staring at her.

“Who was that?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“It was nothing.””

I almost couldn’t believe she said that.

Nothing.

After everything?

After the pantry?

The notebook?

The lies?

“Everything with you is always nothing.””

Her face tightened.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m angry because I spent years trusting you.””

She looked away.

Then quietly said:

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made decisions.””

The next morning, I took Lily to school.

I watched her walk through the doors carrying her little backpack.

She turned around and waved.

I waved back.

But inside, I was falling apart.

Because a question kept repeating in my head.

Was I really her father?

That afternoon, I met with the man who called Vanessa.

His name was Daniel.

We sat across from each other at a quiet restaurant.

He looked uncomfortable.

Like he had been waiting years for this conversation.

“You’re Michael?””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not telling you sooner.””

I leaned forward.

“Start talking.””

Daniel looked down.

“Vanessa and I were together before you.””

“I know.””

His eyes lifted.

“You know?””

“Rebecca told me.””

His expression changed.

“Rebecca found you?””

I nodded.

Daniel sighed.

“Then you know Vanessa has a history.””

“I know she controls people.””

He looked away.

“She wasn’t always like that.””

I had heard those words too many times.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because it’s true.””

He paused.

“But knowing where someone started doesn’t excuse where they ended.””

That was the first thing anyone had said that made sense.

“Why did you call her?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Because I found out she was planning something.””

My body went tense.

“What?””

“She was going to take Lily and leave.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She told me if you ever discovered the truth, she would disappear before you could stop her.””

I felt sick.

“She planned this?””

Daniel nodded.

“She keeps backup plans.””

“What truth?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He placed a folder on the table.

I stared at it.

“What is that?””

“Open it.””

My hands felt heavy as I opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Old paperwork.

And one page that made me stop breathing.

A paternity test.

I looked at Daniel.

“What is this?””

His voice was low.

“Something Vanessa never wanted you to see.””

I looked back down.

The name at the top was mine.

Michael Carter.

The child was Lily.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then I saw the result.

I closed my eyes.

Because the truth was right there.

The truth I had been afraid to find.

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me.””

He swallowed.

“Michael…”

“What does it say?””

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“It says you are Lily’s biological father.””

I stared.

Relief came first.

Then confusion.

“If I’m her father, why would Vanessa tell me I wasn’t?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because that wasn’t the secret.””

My heart sank.

“What was?””

Daniel pushed another document toward me.

A court record.

From years ago.

Before Vanessa met me.

I read the first line.

And my hands started shaking.

May you like

Because it wasn’t about Lily.

It was about Mason.
