Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Door
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was terrified.
There was a difference.
Anger made people act.
Fear made people realize how much they had missed.
I sat in the dark living room with Mason’s message still open on my phone.
The picture haunted me.
Vanessa standing outside Lily’s bedroom.
Late at night.
Holding something.
I waited until morning to ask him.
When Mason came downstairs, he looked exhausted.
Like he hadn’t slept either.
“Mason.””
He stopped.
I showed him the picture.
His face dropped.
“I didn’t want to send that.””
“Why did you?””
He looked toward the stairs.
“Because nobody believed me before.””
Those words hurt.
“Who didn’t believe you?””
He shrugged.
“Everyone.””
I sat down.
“Tell me.””
Mason took a deep breath.
“Mom acts different when you’re gone.””
I stayed quiet.
“She smiles when you come home. She acts like she’s the nicest person in the world.””
He looked at the floor.
“But when it’s just us…”
He stopped.
I leaned forward.
“When it’s just you?””
“She gets angry.””
“About what?””
“About Lily.””
My jaw tightened.
“What does she say?””
Mason whispered:
“She says Lily ruined everything.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Why would she say that?””
“Because after you and Mom got married, she thought you would only care about her and me.””
I looked away.
The pieces were falling together.
Vanessa had always been sweet in front of me.
But behind closed doors?
I didn’t know who she was.
That afternoon, I made a decision.
I wasn’t going to confront her with anger.
I needed the truth.
I needed proof.
When Vanessa came home from work, she acted like nothing happened.
She walked into the kitchen smiling.
“Michael, are we really going to keep fighting about yesterday?””
I looked at her.
“Fighting?””
She sighed.
“Yes. You embarrassed me.””
I almost laughed.
“My daughter was hungry.””
“She’s fine.””
“She was crying.””
“She’s dramatic.””
I stared at her.
Five years old.
And she called her dramatic.
Vanessa poured herself coffee.
“You need to stop letting Lily control you.””
That sentence made my stomach turn.
“Control me?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Children learn what they can get away with.””
I stepped closer.
“She was asking for food.””
“She was testing boundaries.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She was hungry.””
For a moment, her face became cold again.
The same face I saw yesterday.
Then she caught herself.
She smiled.
“You’re stressed, Michael.””
I knew that smile.
It was fake.
Completely fake.
That night, I waited until everyone was asleep.
Then I walked quietly toward the hallway.
Lily’s bedroom door was slightly open.
I stopped.
I heard Vanessa’s voice.
“You need to stop telling your father things.””
My heart stopped.
I moved closer.
Mason was inside.
“I didn’t lie.””
Vanessa whispered:
“You don’t understand what happens when families fall apart.””
I pushed the door open.
Both of them turned.
Vanessa froze.
“Mason.””
He looked scared.
I walked inside.
“What are you talking about?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why are you having secret conversations with my son?””
She crossed her arms.
“You’re spying on me now?””
“No.””
I pointed toward Lily’s room.
“I’m listening because I’m finally paying attention.””
Her expression changed.
Then Mason spoke.
“Dad…”
I turned.
He was holding something.
A small notebook.
“What is that?””
He handed it to me.
“It’s Mom’s.””
I opened the first page.
My hands started shaking.
Because it wasn’t a diary.
It was a list.
A list of things Vanessa had written down.
Rules.
Punishments.
Things she wanted Lily to “learn.””
But one sentence made my entire body go cold.
I read it again.
Then again.
Because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
Vanessa had written:
“If Michael ever finds out, I lose everything.””
I slowly looked up.
Vanessa was standing in the doorway.
Watching me.

And for the first time since I met her…
She looked like she knew the truth was finally catching up with her.
