Chapter 10: The Lie Behind Rebecca’s Story

I stood at the doorway staring at two women who represented two completely different versions of my reality.

Vanessa stood there with a confident expression.

Rebecca stood beside her looking like she wanted to disappear.

For the first time in days, I felt something I thought I had lost.

Doubt.

Not about Lily.

Never about Lily.

But about everything else.

Vanessa noticed the hesitation on my face.

And she smiled.

“I told you.””

Her voice was calm.

“You only know half the story.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“Is that true?””

Rebecca opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Ask her what happened after she left me.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“What happened?””

She looked down.

Then sighed.

“I knew this day would come.””

Mason appeared behind me.

“Dad?””

I held up my hand.

“Stay inside with Lily.””

He nodded reluctantly.

I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

“Talk.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

Rebecca looked at her.

“You really want to do this?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Tell him.””

Rebecca took a deep breath.

“When Vanessa and I separated, I did make mistakes.””

I waited.

“I was angry. I was hurt. I said things I shouldn’t have said.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Tell him the rest.””

Rebecca looked at me.

“But I never hurt my daughter.””

The way she said it made me believe her.

“She’s trying to make you think I’m the same as her.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Because you’re not?””

Rebecca looked at her.

“No.””

The word was firm.

“I made mistakes. You made choices.””

Silence.

Vanessa’s face changed.

I noticed.

That was the reaction of someone who had heard the truth.

Not someone who had been falsely accused.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why did you bring her here?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“Because I wanted you to know everyone has secrets.””

She pointed toward Rebecca.

“She told you I was controlling.””

Rebecca stayed quiet.

“She forgot to mention she cheated.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She closed her eyes.

“I was wrong.””

The honesty surprised me.

Vanessa smiled.

“See?””

But Rebecca continued.

“I made a terrible choice years ago.””

She looked directly at me.

“But I never used my daughter as punishment.””

That sentence hit me.

Because it separated the mistakes from the cruelty.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You’re really going to trust her?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

She seemed surprised.

“I don’t trust either of you.””

That was the truth.

I had spent years trusting everyone around me.

And now I was learning that trust had to be earned.

Not assumed.

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Fine.””

She pulled out her phone.

“Then maybe you should see this.””

She held it toward me.

A video.

My stomach tightened.

“What is it?””

“Something Mason did.””

I looked at her.

“Stop using him.””

“I’m not.””

She pressed play.

The video showed Mason entering Lily’s room.

My heart jumped.

“What am I looking at?””

“Watch.””

The video continued.

Mason walked toward Lily’s bed.

He placed something under her pillow.

Then left.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Looks like your perfect stepson has secrets too.””

I felt confused.

Mason?

Why would he do that?

I took the phone.

“When was this?””

“Last week.””

I looked at Rebecca.

Then back at Vanessa.

“You’ve had this video?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you show me?””

Her silence answered.

Because she was saving it.

A weapon.

I walked inside.

“Mason.””

He came downstairs.

The moment he saw my face, he knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I held up the phone.

His face changed.

“You saw that?””

“What did you put under Lily’s pillow?””

He went pale.

“I…”

“Tell me.””

He looked toward the stairs.

Then whispered:

“A recorder.””

I froze.

“A what?””

“I recorded Mom.””

My anger disappeared.

“What?””

Mason’s eyes filled.

“I knew nobody believed me.””

He swallowed.

“So I wanted proof.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was scared.””

My heart sank.

May you like

Then he said:

“Dad, the recorder caught something worse than anything you’ve seen.””
