Chapter 12: The Reason She Picked Me

I couldn’t speak.

The words echoed in my head.

“She chose you because of Lily.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Toward my daughter’s bedroom.

My little girl.

The reason I woke up every morning.

The reason I worked until my hands hurt.

“What does that mean?””

Eric was quiet.

“Not over the phone.””

I clenched my jaw.

“You called me.””

“Because you needed to know she’s coming after something.””

“What?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Custody.””

My stomach dropped.

“She wants Lily?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Eric sighed.

“Because Vanessa has spent years building a picture.””

“A picture?””

“A perfect family image.””

I looked at Mason.

“She wanted to look like a loving mother.””

Eric continued.

“But she needed Lily to complete it.””

My anger grew.

“She used my daughter as a decoration?””

“I’m saying she wanted control over how people saw her.””

I looked at the recorder.

The notebook.

The locked pantry.

Everything connected.

I met Eric at a park the next morning.

He was younger than I expected.

Maybe early forties.

He looked exhausted.

“You worked with Vanessa?””

He nodded.

“We were business partners.””

“What business?””

“Family counseling services.””

I frowned.

“She worked in counseling?””

“Yes.””

The irony made me sick.

“She knew exactly what to say.””

Eric looked away.

“She knew how to make people trust her.””

I sat down.

“What happened?””

“She started crossing lines.””

“What lines?””

“Manipulating clients.””

My expression changed.

“Why didn’t anyone stop her?””

“Because she was good.””

That answer bothered me.

Because it explained everything.

People like Vanessa didn’t hide because nobody looked.

They hid because everyone believed the performance.

Eric handed me a folder.

“Read this.””

Inside were reports.

Complaints.

Notes.

Patterns.

My hands shook.

“This is real?””

“Yes.””

“Why keep it?””

“Because I knew someday someone would need it.””

I looked at him.

“Why me?””

He looked serious.

“Because you’re the first person who has the power to stop her.””

When I got home, Mason was waiting.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Mom called.””

My body tensed.

“What did she say?””

“She said she wants to meet Lily.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Mason hesitated.

“She said if you don’t let her, she’ll tell people you’re keeping Lily from her.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

The exact move I expected.

Control the story.

Become the victim.

That evening, I received an email.

From Vanessa’s lawyer.

A custody request.

Temporary emergency hearing.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

My hands went cold.

Because Vanessa had written that she feared for Lily’s safety…

and claimed I was the danger.

I looked at the document.

Then I looked at the recorder.

The evidence.

The truth.

But there was one problem.

The hearing was in three days.

And Vanessa had one more surprise waiting.

Because attached to the legal filing was a photo.

A photo of me.

Standing in my own house.

Holding Lily.

And underneath it was a statement:

“Father’s unstable behavior puts child at risk.””
