Chapter 5: The Woman From Vanessa’s Past

I sat at the kitchen table for almost ten minutes after the call ended.

I didn’t move.

I just stared at the phone.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another piece of a life I thought I understood.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

Mason was sitting across from me, quietly doing homework.

But neither of us was really focused.

Finally, he looked up.

“Was that about Mom?””

I nodded.

“Someone from her past.””

Mason’s expression changed.

“You found someone?””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

He hesitated.

Then closed his notebook.

“Mom always told people not to talk about before you.””

“Before me?””

He nodded.

“She said her old life was something she escaped.””

I leaned back.

“What old life?””

Mason looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Tell me what you know.””

He took a breath.

“She used to have another family.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She was married before.””

The room felt colder.

Vanessa had told me her first marriage ended years before we met.

She said it was a simple divorce.

Two people who grew apart.

But suddenly, I wasn’t sure anything she told me was true.

The next morning, I met Rebecca at a small coffee shop across town.

She was nervous.

That was the first thing I noticed.

People who wanted revenge usually looked confident.

Rebecca looked afraid.

“Michael?””

I stood.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I’m Rebecca Miller.””

We sat down.

For a few seconds, she just stared at her coffee.

Then she said:

“Your daughter’s name is Lily, right?””

I felt my body tense.

“How do you know that?””

“Because Vanessa talked about her.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

Rebecca looked away.

“She said Lily was the reason she would never have the life she wanted.””

I felt anger rise.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa wanted control.””

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“She doesn’t like situations she can’t control.””

I remembered the pantry.

The notebook.

The fear in Lily’s eyes.

“What happened in your marriage?””

Rebecca sighed.

“I had a daughter too.””

I looked at her.

“Had?””

Her eyes became glassy.

“She was eight years old when I left Vanessa.””

My chest tightened.

“You were married to a woman?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Vanessa and I were together for years.””

I listened silently.

“She was different at first.””

That sentence sounded familiar.

Everyone said it.

Everyone described the same person.

“The woman I knew was loving, charming, generous.””

Rebecca looked down.

“Until she wasn’t.””

“What changed?””

“Control.””

The word hung between us.

“She started deciding what people could eat, where they could go, who they could talk to.””

My fingers tightened around my coffee cup.

“She did this with your daughter?””

Rebecca nodded slowly.

“She convinced me I was being too soft.””

“What happened?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“She told me children needed discipline.””

A painful silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“I ignored the signs.””

I looked down.

“I did too.””

Rebecca reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

“I kept this because I knew one day someone might need proof.””

I opened it.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Old conversations.

The sender was Vanessa.

I read the first one.

My heart stopped.

It was a message Rebecca had received years ago.

The words were simple.

But they explained everything.

“I know how to make people depend on me.””

I looked up.

Rebecca’s face was pale.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“When Vanessa found out I was going to leave, she didn’t just get angry.””

My throat tightened.

“What did she do?””

Rebecca leaned closer.

“She tried to make sure nobody would ever believe me.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Vanessa.

One sentence.

“I know who you talked to.””

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Because the next message arrived immediately.

“I also know where Lily is.””
