Chapter 7: The Secret Mason Carried
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Vanessa stood outside my front door with a look of confidence I had not seen since everything began.
She had been exposed.
She had lost control.
But somehow, she still believed she had one more card to play.
And that scared me.
I turned toward Mason.
“Is there something you need to tell me?””
His face changed.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Fear.
The kind of fear that comes from carrying something alone for too long.
“Mason?””
He looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“I didn’t want to hurt her.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Tell him the truth.””
I looked at her.
“Stop talking.””
She smiled.
“You’ll want to hear this.””
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
“You’re not coming inside.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Michael—”
“No.””
I pointed toward the driveway.
“Whatever this is, you can say it from there.””
She stared at me.
Then looked at Mason.
“Go ahead.””
Mason lowered his head.
“When Lily first came to live with us…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“She wasn’t the only one Mom treated differently.””
My chest tightened.
“What happened?””
Mason sat down on the porch steps.
“After Dad left, Mom changed.””
I sat beside him.
“Changed how?””
“She started saying I wasn’t enough.””
The words were quiet.
But they carried years of pain.
“She said I wasn’t successful enough. Smart enough. Good enough.””
I looked at him.
“You’re twelve.””
He shrugged.
“I know.””
That broke my heart.
A child who should have been worrying about school and friends had been measuring his own worth.
“What does this have to do with Lily?””
Mason looked at the ground.
“When you and Lily moved in, Mom was happy.””
I listened.
“She said she finally had the family she wanted.””
“Then what happened?””
His eyes moved toward the house.
“Lily got more attention.””
I understood.
“And she didn’t like that.””
He nodded.
“She started telling me that Lily was taking my place.””
My stomach twisted.
“She told you that?””
“All the time.””
Vanessa’s voice came from behind us.
“Because it was true.””
I turned.
She was still standing there.
“You really believe you can blame everything on me?””
I stood.
“You’re the one who said it.””
She shook her head.
“No, Michael. You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Her eyes became cold.
“I spent my whole life taking care of people who never appreciated me.””
I stared at her.
“So you punished children?””
She looked away.
“I wanted respect.””
Mason whispered:
“You wanted control.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for you.””
Mason’s eyes filled.
“I never asked you to hurt Lily.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.
“She’s not even your daughter.””
The words landed like a punch.
I froze.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa immediately realized what she had done.
But it was too late.
Mason looked at me.
“I didn’t want to tell you this.””
“Tell me what?””
He swallowed.
“Mom has been saying things about Lily’s real father.””
I stared.
“Lily’s real father?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Michael, don’t listen to him.””
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
“Now you explain.””
She looked nervous.
For the first time.
“She said Lily wasn’t yours.””
The world went quiet.
I looked toward the house.
Toward the room where my little girl was sleeping.
My daughter.
The child I raised.
The child who called me Daddy.
I looked back at Vanessa.
“Are you saying Lily isn’t my biological daughter?””
She didn’t answer.
And that silence was worse than any confession.
I walked inside.
My hands were shaking.
I needed answers.
I needed the truth.
But before I could say anything else, Vanessa’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
A name appeared.
Someone I didn’t recognize.
She answered.
“Why are you calling me?””
I watched her expression.
Then I heard the voice through the speaker.
A man.
“You promised me you would never tell him.””
Vanessa went completely still.
My heart started racing.
May you like
Because that man knew exactly who I was.
And he knew exactly what Vanessa had been hiding.
