Chapter 6: The Truth About Mason

I read the message three times.

Each time, the fear became stronger.

Not because Vanessa threatened me.

Because she mentioned Lily.

My daughter.

I stood up so quickly the chair scraped against the floor.

Rebecca looked alarmed.

“What happened?””

I showed her the phone.

Her face changed immediately.

“She’s doing it again.””

“Doing what?””

“Trying to scare you.””

I grabbed my keys.

“I need to get home.””

Rebecca stopped me.

“Michael.””

I turned.

“Don’t go there angry.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa knows how to turn situations around.””

I hated that she was right.

I had spent years thinking Vanessa was the calm one.

The reasonable one.

But now I understood.

She wasn’t calm.

She was calculated.

When I arrived home, Lily was sitting on the couch watching cartoons.

The second she saw me, she ran over.

“Daddy!””

I picked her up.

I held her tighter than usual.

She noticed.

“Are you okay?””

I forced a smile.

“I’m okay, sweetheart.””

But I wasn’t.

Not even close.

Mason came downstairs.

“Did she come back?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked relieved.

Then nervous.

“There’s something I need to tell you.””

I already knew those words meant another secret.

“What is it?””

He sat down.

“When Mom married you, she wasn’t just looking for a husband.””

I stared at him.

“What do you mean?””

Mason looked toward Lily.

“She wanted a perfect family.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

He swallowed.

“She thought if she married you, she could erase everything from before.””

I remembered Rebecca.

The past.

The old marriage.

The patterns.

“What happened before me, Mason?””

He was quiet.

Then he said:

“She made me choose sides.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“Between her and my real dad.””

I sat down.

“She told me my dad didn’t care about me.””

Mason’s eyes filled with tears.

“She told me if I loved her, I wouldn’t talk about him.””

I didn’t know what to say.

This wasn’t just about Lily.

This was a pattern.

A way of controlling people.

Vanessa didn’t just hurt one person.

She isolated them.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Until they believed they had nowhere else to go.

That evening, there was a knock on the door.

I opened it.

Vanessa stood outside.

She looked different.

Not angry.

Not cold.

Broken.

“Michael, please.””

I didn’t move.

“What do you want?””

She looked past me.

At Lily.

“Can I talk to her?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Her face fell.

“I’m her mother.””

I looked at her.

“Then act like one.””

She flinched.

For a moment, I saw something real in her eyes.

Regret.

Or maybe fear.

“I made mistakes.””

I shook my head.

“Mistakes are forgetting a birthday.””

My voice lowered.

“What you did was a choice.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I can explain everything.””

“Then explain this.””

I held up the notebook.

Her face went pale.

“You took that?””

“No.””

I looked at Mason.

“He gave it to me.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

And the anger returned.

“You.””

Mason stepped back.

I moved between them.

“Don’t.””

She looked at me.

Then whispered:

“You have no idea what he did.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

A smile that made me uncomfortable.

“Mason isn’t the innocent person you think he is.””

I looked at my stepson.

He froze.

Vanessa continued.

“Ask him why he was hiding things from you.””

Nobody spoke.

Mason looked at the floor.

And for the first time…

May you like

I wondered if there was another secret.

One that even Mason had been afraid to tell me.
